Planting seed and watering soil

Hey guys.

So I got 2 HSO Blue Dream and 2 HSO Purple TW just seeing light for the first time yesterday.

In the pot I dug out a cone/cylinder in the regular planting soil and filled it up with a lighter seedling soil and planted the seeds with taproot down then watered maybe 1dl on the light soil area.

The pot is about 4L(1gal), when will i need to water again? Should i water from bottom tray to encourage the roots to go downwards?

Some people do that. I never do and get gr8 results. I always water from top. This particular concern of yours is not something to worry over, IMHO. Water them at the right time in the right amount of the right strength, and it won't matter if you water from top or bottom. IMHO.

Do you think the small amout of water i gave will be enough for a few more days?

Im not sure i will be able to tell when the plant needs water in such early stage..

Also, my only light/heat source(cool grow space) is a 1000w 3000k LED at about 180cm above pots. Do you think it might cause problems?

OK, I see that you've planted in what I consider too big of a container.

Cannabis plants love their wet-dry cycle. They love to get wet, but then they love to get a bit dry to promote oxygen intake. When you plant in a large container, you have to be real careful about over watering. Cause small plants cant drink up all the water and so the roots stay wet too long without oxygen.

Next time, do this:

1. Plant in Rapid Rooter plugs.

2. Once you see roots from the bottom of the plugs, transplant into 18-ounce Dixie cups (but first punch drainage holes in the bottom).

3. The next transplant should be into 1.5 gallon pots.

4. The next transplant should be into 3-gallon pots.

5. The next transplant should be done in either 5 or 7 gallon pots (I like 7 gallon pots).

In a perfect world...IMHO...

And if you use ProMix HP, you can't really over water in these containers because of the gr8 drainage ProMix HP has.

Thanks, thats a really thorough reply. Next time ill start them in party cups.

So what about my current watering problem? Should i just do the finger method and water real carefully now?

A easy way to determine when you need to water is by feeling the weight difference in the pots. Next time you water your plants pick up the pot when you're done, then fill a pot with dry soil and you will see there's a significant difference.

Thanks for your reply bud. When I grew in coco thats exactly what I did.

I just dont know how much to water right now.. I misted the top of the soil and inside the party cup standing over the seedling today.

So far they seem happy with the small amount i gave them when planting the seed.

How do you guys go about watering in early stages of the plant?

I would water it just like you're doing for a week or so until roots get established.

Just misting them in the plastic cup? Or should i give them another cup of water?

Will the roots still find their way down if theres no water down there?

I would give them the cup and you should be good for a few days

I used rapid rooters etc. Now I use grodan cubes. I soak seed in warm water to start germination stat.

basically 100% success rate.

28 degrees at 65% humidity. I soak the cubes for 10 seconds. Put seed in point down. No tail. Why would you grow a tail out of ground right?

Put in dome. With a syringe i put about 5ml in the hole to keep it moist.

done.

Main cause for new users is trying to germ in a medium like soil or something easy to drown. Or too deep. Or pressed in hard. Remember. These get blown away into the wind and land and grow forests. . .

I type very fast so I hope that helped.

My record for seed in cube to sprout is 21 hours. I'm going for a record today with some AKR if the (*&&^()*& post arrives.

Yes if you plant the seed 1/4 down with loose soil ontop, and gently watered in, you're good! Do not rewater for at least 3 days. Then lightly water that spot again lightly if she hasnt popped. Dont blast it with your led either. As soon as I can see seedling break soil I suspend a 23 actual watt (100 watt equivalent) 5000k cfl about an inch over each seedling. I find the cfl light is gentle yet intense enough for the first couple weeks. Then bring out the led when you have a more viable 2-3 week old plant with a few sets of leaves.

Oh, great reply. All my questions answered. Well they popped above soil like yesterday. Then i just misted her and the top of the soil and inside the plastic cup.

I removed the 1kw 3000k led and put in a 300w marshydro 1gen led about 30-40cm above the cups, that shouldnt be too hard on them right?

I always make it sit in some tray with water n sum good old 5-55-5 1/4 strenght ..

That seems like allot of light for seedlings (300 watt led) but I guess it wont hurt at that height (30-40cm). I like to use one CFL (100 watt equivalent) 23 actual watt for seedlings week 1. Then add another one for week 2, and a third for week 3. Then at week 4 I lose the CFL's alltogether and bring in a 150 watt LED. From there I up it to 300 watt LED at a month and a half of vegging. Then on to a 600 watt LED to flower.
