Patience is key IMHO.
Id personally let them continue to grow until you see roots peaking out of the bottom.
If you want to veg them which I assume is your plan you could keep them in the sun all day. Currently I have some vegging in my greenhouse just waiting till the daylight hours switch them to flowering.
What do you need to save them from? If anything just put a fan on to sturdy up the stalk or get an indoor light for them so you can manually adjust the time they get light

Veg times are typically 18 hours on 6 hours off, granted some people like 24 on 0 off.
It might be beneficial to pick up a t-5 or two and use those inside to get them bigger then transition to outside.
