They have an episode of "The Good Wife" on right now where their trying to arrest the creator of BitCoin for trying to establish an illegal currency, what a coincidence.

The government could shut down the silk road if they really tried, but it would take a dedicated effort by the intelligence services, not the DEA. And recreational drug use isn't worth the effort.

Exactly. Probably would hurt them (federal government) in some way honestly...

Yeah. The government developed TOR and released it so more people would use it to disguise their traffic, anonymous drug markets drive a lot of traffic to encrypted networks which greatly strengthens them. It's a good bet the CIA and NSA are big fans of the silk road. They ran coke to help fun right wing south American guerillas. This doesn't seem like a big leap from there.
