its common. usually a result of stress, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, all of the above. nothing imminently harmful about it. happened to me once. opened my eyes, couldnt move, and was still half-dreaming. saw stuff flying around the room. god i would hate to wake up from a nightmare in that predicament.

Well it is usually harmless unless you are a Filippino man, in which case there is a genetic defect in which a hormone that paralyzes you as you sleep is overproduced causing a shut down of the body and death, know as Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome. But what causes you to awake in a paralyzed state is the hormone doesn't have enough time to dissipate and you are stuck, happened to me when I fell asleep in class and was awoken suddenly. It's harmless, and if you didn't produce this hormone you would act out your dreams which would be much more disturbing depending on what you're dreaming of.

Ive had this happen before and my Dr thought maybe I had a seizure. Did you notice an overwhelming sound that got louder and louder?

I've never had this happen, but I kinda wish I would. That sounds pretty interesting.
its terrifying dude, I was screaming help at the top of my lungs and my wife said I barely made a sound. Imagine being conscious but totally unable to move, speak, or breath even. I thought I was dying:fire:

Heh, it's so ppl sleeping don't get up and act out their dreams. It keeps you in bed where you belong.

Your timing just got off a bit.

This is the same reason some people think they been abducted by aliens in there sleep (you notice the aliens always come during sleep).

You feel like your awake but your actually dreaming. Thats why people believe so strongly that they were abducted. Its seems REAL

I sure this guy felt he was really screaming, he just half dreaming half awake

This used to happen to me often. And it was scary. People climbing down walls towards me and me unable to scream out. The last time it happened I actually believe I had an outta body experience during this. My body felt like it was spinning in circles and it lifted up and went and circled above the bed and slowly lowered itself into the floor. I melted into the floor and instantly was concious. I've never had this experience again. And no I was not on drugs.
