gday guys i just bought a par38 floodlight and put in my mother
tent...do these work or am i wasting my electricity?
thanks

Generally you wanna away anything Incandescent as they create light with heat and not much plant usable light, what you want is some CFLs. :bigjoint:

hey mate, sorry to say it but you're just wasting your cash... Par38 generate so much heat and fuck all light and has a really shitty lm/W (lumens per watt) ratio... That's 150w that could be better spent.

Look for a LED retrofit PAR 38/240v globe in 6400k-6500k spectrum. They use around 20w and will give you around 1200lm of light suitable for a mother.

Alternatively look at some LED Growlights that come as complete units. hope this helps

its a 23w:120w.. it says 1200
on the box...

Well give it a shot and see how you go... I'd just monitor the heat and ensure the mum' get's lit as evenly as possible. The globe has the right specs so in theory you should be fine, although your mum might need some more lumens along the way.

But should you choose to go that way, you could get a lot more lumens out of an LED fixture designed for mothers.

im trying to do six in a dwc rig..ive got other cfls littered...i know i need something serious but i cant afford it...might have to look at t5's , leds would be great but the goods one are too costly for me...

p.s... the floodlight is leaving a funny smell lingering...

Anyone know if this is toxic?

I can not tell you if it's a smell of normal operation, or it's leaking halogen.. if it's leaking halogen, however - the vapors you smell would be both highly corrosive, and toxic. When you smell it, does it feel like it's burning the sinus or lungs? If not, it's normal operation or close, and no halogen leak -should- be present.

Thankyou, much appreciated!.....p.s it is a CFL par38 globe.

Yup, saw that - is why I googled to see what was in the bulb so I didn't mention halogen if it was something else, or a special mix o' things :D Quite welcome!

Do you think the girls would show signs of stress if this is a leak? I went in for a good whiff, nothing really noticeable..i mean the odors.there but its not obtrusive..then again my lungs and sinnus are fairly well conditioned...

I'd think she would show signs, and start changing colors as the stomata may very well be pissed off with the halogen.. and if she does, you may have to do a bit of experimentation if things get really bad.. that'd be treating with iodine, I've heard of it done by a few, can not confirm it works for marijuana plants or not, but it works for humans. (I know this really doesn't help in the big picture), but could be a last ditch effort should she start flipping out on you) Do you have another with semi-sensitive sinus that you trust near said halogen (close roommate that already knows of the grow) that you could use to see how intense it is?

I do..but she.freaks out over everything..its localized within the tent...i have got a variety of new strains on the go.but im pretty sure its the light..
Edit.I'm 100% sure its the light!..odour appeared when light first switched on..

Could just be the operation of it, and perhaps a solvent or something being cooked off of it (especially if you were handling nutes, and touched the bulb at any time.. didn't fully wipe the bulb down while it was off, etc) - as long as you don't see the plants changing in any drastic fashion, I would not worry at this time unless it smells like plastic melting, or something on fire, obviously.

It is reminiscent of a fruity type solvent smell..not really toxic to the nose...i was glueing some airstones to the bottom a tub previous to the light going on...maybe I've gotten an angel hair of glue on the bulb..when the bulb is heated the turpines of roasting glue are being released....
Cheers mate!

Tis quite possible that something like that occured, as I'm not at all familiar with the conditions of your garden in any fashion - stay safe and have fun!
