thats a great question i wish i had an answer for u, but i had that problem while i was growing hydro they all died from wat i think was overwatering ... anyone got any input

ive never actualy done hydro b4 but i would guess the air stone makes the air bubbles so it isent all the time totaly semerged so it would be just enough but im a newb when it comes 2 hydro so im taking guesses lol

well i had the air stones and everything but u put enough water in watever u are using to just cover the bottom of the roots... but even that little bit of constant water should still would be over watering

Depends on they type of hydro set up. Nutrient solutions are well aerated if not in constant circulation. Some set ups such as aeroponics provide superior oxygenation to the root zone.

well im using a plastic tub as a reservoir and i plan to stick a pump and a wide airstone at the bottom for movement/circulation/o2.
i read up several basic hydro systems and this seems to be the easiest and cheapest... only thing im missing is nutrient solution.
i plan to buy General Hydroponics solution and throw those in, i got the proper formula and all but thing is I CANT FIND THAT ANYWHERE!! rofl... no gardening shop has it and all we got here is stupid miracle gro... and im scared to use that cause it seems phony.
i live in hawaii... if any1 else lives on oahu and could tell me where they would sell General Hydro nutes from much appreciated..
Its all about the oxygen. Plants in DWC (deep water culture) have their roots submerged completely pretty much all of the time. Its all about having airstones in the bottom providing that ever needed oxygen that keeps the plant alive and kicking. Other forms of hydro always have some way of getting lots of air to the root zone. Thats what makes the plant defy being overwatered.

so the roots shouldnt float along the water's surface???
oh and also, if my plants are all in dirt right now, would it be ok to put them into my hydro system now? imean put 100% of the roots into the water and only thing at the top is just to hold my plants straight?
EDIT: Oh! forgot to ask, since i dont have the nutes available right now, would it kill my plants to go without nutrients and just water for a couple of days?

They will die from shock if you move them to hydro from soil. Buy hydro nutrients at a grow shop or online.

aw dammit... so i shud just throw away my plants and just start from seeds then?
i cant find a real growshop here on oahu. :/ everything is at city mill or some crap. and its all miracle grow or something even more generic. cant find rockwool either >_<
thats 9 plants down the drain... and i waste 1.5 months
ahhhr if they will die from shock, then im even more confused!! how do you get them into the water in the first place?! cause a seed isnt gonna know that theres water below it, and it will laugh at me if it knows its in a bundle of dry toilet paper.

well u can go from dirt to hydro i have done it numerous times but it will put the plants in shock for about a week, U should be able to find fish emulsion in ur local grow store which is a great hydro nute... i used that and a generic shultz brand plant food..u should prob wait till they get to be around a foot to a foot and a half before u do transplant if u decide to....

Your plants dont ever get overwatered really, they get under oxygenated. When you ater em too much in soil they cdrown in unoxygenated soil, no air in the dirt.
In hydro they are constantly being given air. That is what it is all about getting more air to the roots. The airstone gives the water alot of air to hold that dirt could not. So in only water being oumped full of air they get alot more air than they could in dirt, that is what maes them grow so well. more air.
they get under aired then they die. too much water too dirt does it. airtones in dwc a must! Airstones for other things just nice as the movemnt of the nutrient water gives the air.
we give hydro nutrients a secial set of assests in their mix to give the water the properties of soil. Mae sure you buy hydro nutes. Gh 3 part is the most used. But advanced seems to be everyones fav along with fox farms. Also canna nutes is a 2 part deal so less chance to mess up. The astronaits use GH 3 part micro, grow, and bloom.
what will your medium be? Dwc,, it sounds like.
You can transplant form dirt easy. Carefully remove the pot and gently wash off the roots in water, ro water, carfully clean all the roots then lay into your netpots or whateber hydro mediumm you have chosen. Lots off peeps use netpots an hydroton or any other fast dry media. I suggest dunking your plants in a bowl of water sotly to clean. Try not to tear any roots as that will damage and use superthrve in the water. Let them big enough that transplanting them wont hurt too tiny of roots, waht the guy above me said

well explained. BUT* can u get ANY of those nutrient solutions in hawaii?? i live on oahu and the garden shops here are pretty lame, only selling miracle grow. this one lady told me "Oh go use the powders, all purpose and superbloom miracle grow. shud do you good!". ugh.. i prefferably want GH. and some1 told me i could skip the FloraGrow and go with the "Lucas method" so i can save some money. which is the best on the price-performance ratio???
also here are some pics of my supplies so far... and BIG question, would it be ok to use a shallow and wide bin or does it have to be deep??
are these supplies im using going to work??? im really stuck on what to use to suspend my plants ontop the water. ineed a visual >_<. some people say styrafoam but im stuck imagining that.
I plan to use these style of cups. could they be used for the whole grow since root space is technically dealt with? and would any solid pile of small objects be good medium? ie; marbles, any small rocks, dirt?
those last pics are of my current temporary setup. all those plants are 1.5 months LOL even the baby, would u believe? this is the main reason why im going hydro, i have a much better chance to do things properly with it. as i dont have space for pots but if they are all in one container in small cups then it should make things more Ez.

looks like your going for dwc. Looks good, get a few more holes on the bottom half of those cups, theyll be fine until you can get the right shit on your next grow. Whatever nutes you are using, make sure they have macro nutes in them. And those plants are tiny boss, what kind of light u got on them?

nevermind, just saw the cfl's in the pic... they look to be the wrong spectrum, might just be the pic though. I uses small rocks for my fitst attempt just to make sure i can do it before i baught all the proper shit, worked out fine for me. But back to those lights, go to the hardware store and get some lamp socket t's or y's they split your single lamp into 2 sockets... then get you some more lamps in the blue spectrum. Try getting the lights and grow a few in the soil first to get a feel for what u need to be looking for ( soil is way more fogiving ) And like someone else suggested earlier clone you favorite before u flower and keep it going

I have no room for pots as u can see in my picture. if i am to keep my children i have no other choice. my friend who grew her own hydros is in china right now and i cannot contact her. she had alot of yield in an even smaller space than what i got so i know its possible. '
it is worth the trouble

if u have good med. then there no way to over water it if too much water then it wont grow as fast
