Opium poppies

Opium poppies grow in the wild here.. just picked a couple of pods a couple of days ago.

It's not papaver somniferum though, it's the papaver setigerum

Erowid said:
All poppies produce a milky juice, but only papaver somniferum and its relative, Papaver setigerum, produce any morphine alkaloids. Papaver setigerum is an obscure wild plant and is not used for either legal or illegal opium production.

You can just buy them from a supermarket since they are used for food. And I don't know anything about harvesting sorry.. I'd like to know though especially for planting them outdoor :) anyone..?

And to anyone who tried opium tea, can you just add a shitload of sugar to make it less bitter or does it affect the opium?

Well i kno how to harvest em. Once its rip , you get a razor blade n start slicing thin slicing vertically along the side of the poppy. N the white will start to com out, u scrap it off wit a razor blade. I could be wrong. But im sure thats what i've read somewhere at somepoint. But for as how long to grow them before that i'm not sure.

Nothing that you buy from a store in the U.S. has morphine alkaloids, hen & chicks etc are just regular flowers, only papaver somniferum and it's family will yield opium. You can legally buy somniferum seeds from overseas on Ebay for very cheap (5$ for 1000 seeds, be sure to look at sellers feedback), I'd avoid buying pods though, they are illegal to import and might get snatched by customs.

Check out the erowid page for all the details on growing and extraction: Erowid Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppy) Vault

Once the petals drop off the poppy you wait a week then make a shallow scratch around the outside of the poppy, best to do this in the evening and let it seep through the night. The morning you can scrape off the dry residue and bam ur done. Currently have 12 on the go, but still seedlings. Take ages to grow unlike our good friend Mary Jane.

ermm i dont know specifically as this is my first grow although i did find out online somewhere... I seem to remember thinking that mine would be ready about July/ August. Nearer to July though (Im growing 12 indoors and about 20 or so outside, concentrating on my indoor ones though) Erm i planted them about 3 weeks ago? Maybe a a month ago. Sorry this is all very vague, im new to this as well. I found some good sites online devoted to opium growing, i'll try find some links.

Got them from eBay, although it depends where you live.. Although i cant imagine international postage being a problem with these seeds, they came in a thin envelope.

PERSIAN WHITE POPPY PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM 500 SEEDS on eBay, also Annuals Biennials, Plants Seeds Bulbs, Garden Plants, Home Garden (end time 08-May-08 20:15:04 BST)

Cost me under £3 for 500. And the best thing was there was some O in the packet as they obviously had small quantities on the seeds from being inside the pod. Not enough to do much but gives ya a good feeling when you know what these seeds will make lol. Hope that helps.

the seeds found at the market are papaver.s and contain trace opiates unless they have been washed or steamed i have not tried growing them though. i have sprouted seeds i got directly from dried pods they grow slowly i had to move so i never finished them. as far as supermarket seeds go i read a report of one kid actually dying from making tea with around 5 pounds of seeds. the police report showed that the tea he made contained quite a bit of opiates i forget the details google it there is a police report and all that. he had done this several times but the batch that killed was for whatever reason much stronger. i have made tea with dried papaver.s pods and that definetly works if made properly:peace:
