Ontario changes mind on medical marijuana use in public places after earlier OK

he Ontario Liberal government says it will re-examine its recent move to allow medical marijuana users to smoke and vape the drug anywhere in the province, just one day after announcing the change.

"We've heard the concerns around this regulation, and we're going to take this feedback and see if this regulation is the best way to move forward," Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla said Thursday.

She said the province will "take a hard look and see and make sure that this is in the best interest of Ontario."

Medical marijuana users were quietly exempted this week from a law banning the use of e-cigarettes anywhere smoking is prohibited, meaning they could smoke or vape just about anywhere, including at work or in restaurants.

However, under the exemption, employers or restaurant owners could still ban medical marijuana users from smoking on the premises.

"There could be a situation where somebody needs it for pain management, so it's about accommodating their interest but also making sure that Ontarians are protected from any harm of second-hand smoke or … vapour," Damerla said.

The minister was asked whether the province should have conducted consultations over the regulation.

"I know we consulted very broadly," she said. "As you know, all of these things go through the committee process, and everybody is welcome to come and give their presentations, so everyone should have had that opportunity to presen

The main thing here we should be liking is the change in attitude of current gov. I don't expect things over night and would rather have them take time and implement/legalize properly (well they wont out right legalize like any other naturally occurring plant) but we shouldn't be pissing in their cornflakes if things don't go fast.

I'd say you have your assessment backwards; the more vocal and vociferous we cannabis legalization supporters are NOW, DURING this embryonic legislation prices, the easier things will be going forward. Raising a ruckus NOW gives them political cover for far more sweeping change than would be enacted incrementally once the opposition gets organized.

And there will be an opposition, so make THEM walk the rules back- push as hard as you can NOW.

DID I MENTION THAT NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO MAKE YOURSELVES HEARD?!

NOW! As in write emails to ALL of your elected representative officials and hit the send button- then email your friends and get involved in some activism.

Like, what are you still reading this for?! NOW, ALREADY!

You're both right.
The public should have their concerns addressed now while politicians sit down to draft an initial plan.

But, if it doesn't happen over night so we can have a system that works and doesn't get taken advantage of like mmar so it needs to be tightend up, we should be ok with that and not kick up too much of a stink unless it drags on.

The mmar was only taken advantage by the doctors that charged threw the wazzzzo to get a script. If a couple of bad apples abused it dosnt mean it won't happen with the new system. Plus people drink and drive all the time should we do away with cars?

Let's hope it's legal so there is no need for the system.

What are these new rules written on a chalk board and wipe off every other day ? Like they change it down at the coffee shop for todays flavors.....
Yes ...no...maybe...ah...were not sure now. The little girl ordering ice cream know what she wants more than this.

Lol let me decipher it for you hippy. Nothing's changed. Nothing. Ontario is brining in a vaping ban. And someone said hey what about mmj patients? So the big talking head said no they're good to keep smoking everywhere just as befor. Now that it's been brought up as a topic there's some debate about if it should remain legal. It will. The exception they wrote in giving the business owners the right to outright ban it in their businesses goes far enough. So in the end things are just as they were. 0 change.

It's amazing how many people care about the "rules". I didn't care shit was illegal back in the day when I used for rec. I got my medical license, and now give zero fucks.
I smoked my vape pen loaded with bubble hash last night at a hockey game. There was a piece of paper posted at the all the entrances explaining how the city has a new non smoking policy in parks and public places, including vape pens and E-cigarettes.
Did I give a fuck? Nope, did I try and hide it? Nope. I got lit the whole game, people all around me and nobody said fuck all. I've found that if you just do whatever you want, smoke like a boss, and don't act sketchy and try and hide shit, nobody will question you and just let you be.
