One brain-dead, five hospitalised after French drug trial goes wrong

A "serious accident" during a drugs trial in France has left one person brain-dead and five hospitalised, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said Friday.
She said the six had been taking part in a "trial of an oral medication being developed by a European laboratory" in Rennes, northwest France.

Media reports said the drug was a cannabis-based painkiller, but this was denied by the health ministry.

"A serious accident took place," the minister said, adding the study had been halted and all volunteers taking part recalled.

The study was a phase one clinical trial, in which healthy volunteers take the medication to "evaluate the safety of its use, tolerance and pharmacological profile of the molecule", the minister added in a statement.

Medical trials typically have three phases to assess a new drug or device for safety and effectiveness.

Phase I entails a small group of volunteers, and focuses only on safety.

Phase II and Phase III are progressively larger trials to assess the drug's effectiveness, although safety remains paramount.

The Paris prosecutor's office said an investigation had been opened.

Touraine said she was determined to "shed light on" what happened.

Time to ban pharmaceuticals. I just heard a news report on the radio and there was a woman on talking about a 'cross Canada' information tour. (4 cities constitute 'cross Canada'?) The plan is to spread propaganda and false information about weed and youth. Prohibition on booze ended 90 years ago and it kills people everyday...I think they need to address that first.

Sounds like we may have enough people here that may be in those 4 cities. We should go have a debate with these people and show others who attend how idiotic these arguments are

Reporters almost always f-up the science. Most of them are deer-in-the-headlights once the tech talk starts. I would not be surprised if the cannabis-kerfuffle was caused by one of them asking an ambulance driver what was going on instead of awaiting a full explanation from the clinical trial sponsor.
