older seeds = more males?

I keep getting males. The last 5 seeds that have sprouted have turned out to be males. The seeds are about 3 years old and I am wondering if there is some tie between seed sex and long term viability. Does anyone know?

*bump* If anyone has read anything in regards to this, I would love to hear about it.

I started a few more seeds from the same group and 100% sprouted. I am interested to see if the trend continues (even if in a morbid sense). I should also be getting some new seeds of either NL#5 and/or Blueberry strains from a growing acquaintance this weekend. Gotta get me some females. I'm tired of wasted time.

noone does a lot of talking about(or doing, i suspect) research on the breeding of males

i wonder if a male plant could go herm and produce masculinized seed
if they're bagseed from dirt, i understand that it's not uncommon to find male pieces and parts in schwag bags that were plantation grown

prolly not, but - hey - you SAID anybody :)

each seed has the genetics in it to make it either male or female.. i don't see what time would do to the female chromosones so that only the males would be more readily available.. just don't see any logic there..

I am just finishing a crop of Purple Bubba Kush that were 3 year old seeds. All 6 I planted turned out to be females. So I don't think time has anything to do with it, just the luck of the draw.

That sums it up on my part

Luck. and if seeds are old then no it doesnt affect the sex just the germ success rate.

I`m growing 2 plants now from 20 year old seeds. Both are looking Great and look like they both might be female. Just keep trying, you`ll get there in the end ;-)

Are they really that old, shit. You must have stored them in the fridge.
Not in the fridge but in a Budweiser lighter in a dark and cold draw in the garage. This is it and some more seeds that i have left. ALL are 20 Years Old IMGP0670.jpg It`s just the bags that have been renewed as the old ones fell apart.

Thanks for the replies. I will just chalk it up to bad luck.

Oh yeah, of course the genetics would not change. The haploids you get are the haploids you get and that's that. I guess what I was asking was if male seeds tend to be viable for a longer period of time than female seeds, and therefore older seeds that successfully germ have a higher probability of being male. It doesn't sound like that's the case based on other people's answers though.

Now that's a tough question. I don't think that most of us have that kind of experience. My suggestion would be to send a private message to one or some of the old timers (such as admin) and see if they have an answer for you.

i'd much rather try and contact an older breeder who has some more experience, maybe someone from the mr nice forums would be the person to ask.. shanti used to be on over there, and if anyone would know the answer to your question, i think it would be him as he's been making cup winning strains since the mid 90s or so.. neville would also be an informative choice as well..
reeferman has also been making beans for ages, although i'm not so sure how you'd go about contacting him.. you can find neville and shanti right on the mr nice website as they have a nice forum there as well.

Thanks Xeno and Racer. I didn't know about the Mr. Nice site. It does seem like one of the long time breeders over there may have some insight on this. If I hear back from anyone, I'll post their answer here.

Please do. We're all wanting to know this too. +rep if you get a viable answer.
