Old Hippies Never Die

Old Hippes Never Die,
they just smell dead ! LOL

I am meeting some youngsters here at RIU, and a few older hippies all the way back from the 60's and 70's.

I'd enjoy hearing from some of the old timers, who were known BACK THEN as FLOWER CHILDREN, OR HEADS, FREAKS, OR HIPPIES. I'd like to share some old stories, first trip, first smoke, first Pop Festival.

Anyone here go to Woodstock? Atlanta Pop Festival?

I am 59 years old, and I went to the Atlanta Pop Festival at age 20 in July 1970. I was a 240 lb redneck football player who often went to the races at that race track looking for a fight. Thats jsut what redneckd did. But at the Festival, I was blown away by seeing all those hippies, laying around screwing, smoking, running around naked. LOVE was what it was all about. I took my first LSD there, Timothy Leary was giving it away free off the back of a pick up truck. It was in liquid in a small one inch tall cup, in about 1/2 tablespoon of orange juice. I 'd never heard of Led Zepplin who played there, they did not have a album out yet. I'd nver heard of Johnny Winter, or SPIRIT, or most of the bands there. Smoked my first joint and hash there too. 6 months later, I weighed 140 lbs. wore bell bottoms ONLY, went 13 years without a hair cut, was called a HEAD or FREAK and I dealt off Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, walking down the sidewalk chanting "grass, hash, LSD" to every one I met. I did Conscientious Objector Counseling and was paid by the Federal Government to do it.

in 1970 to about '73, you could stand on the corner of Peachtree Street and 14th Street to 10th St , the hippie district, and smoke a j in front of the pigs.
You could also openly deal, we were harmless and the cops thought "who cares what they do to each other". We were all freaks, we were all brothers and sisters, no matter if you was gay, black, Mexican, whatever. Everyone was accepted. ANGER and HATE and Prejudice was NOT COOL and you just didn't see it.
Around 73 or 74, the bikers came for the chicks and drugs and money, the militant black brothers came for the same plus to recruit and organize, and with them came coke and heroin , and the "good ole days" of dealing on the streets and smoking at free concerts in the park without hassle were over.
We bought Nichol bags for $5.00, about a matchbox full, and paid $12 to $15 for a lid, three fingers in a baggie, about 3/4 oz, the name LID came from the Prince Albert Tobacco Can size. Almost always what was called DIRT MEXICAN , full of seed, tasted like dirt, compacted, bricked, big stems, not manicured, half buds, half leaves, giant stlaks, males mixed in too. We seldom got quality GOLD BUD, RED BUD, or MICHMICAN OR jAMACIAN. Columbian did not come around until around 1976. You could not give HOME GROWN away for free then. No one wanted it.
ACID was $5, Peoyte $5, Psylisibyn, (pronounced SillySibun, I'm not sure how to spell it) was $5. Hash was $5 a gram. We did drugs but we did not do dope (Coke, Heroin, Meth-Speed, Pills) A lot of heads would not speak to you if you did dope, but we all did drugs. LOL Everything from food, beds, drugs to women were shared by all.
Those were the days!

Was anyone else here, back there then? Let's share some old days and talk.

That was long before my time, but everyone (Including my parents) tell me I would of fit in perfectly because of my mindset. I wish I would of been around back then......

Roseman.... I'm an old head, never qualified for hippie status. I never wore tye die or sandals... LOL... I remember the good ole day's, before Mary became a business for the gangs, illegals & the Mafia.
.
I miss $ 20 ounces. I miss those old tin Prince Albert Cans. People pay $ 20 for a gram of Chronic these days.... now that's criminal.....
.
I stopped buying in 1981, after I got some shitty mexican swag from an illegal in downtown San Dog... $ 20 for a quarter of mostly seeds, stems and barely smokable dirt weed. Man was I torqued.
.
I started growing in 78 and did OK. In 81 a drought took out my grow and that's why I bought the afore mentioned swag. Two puffs and I swore, never again - I'm going to grow my own. And that is exactly what I've done. Never for commercial interests, just personal improvement.
.
It's nice to know, I'm not the oldest head on this board, you've got me by 6 years.
.
Well, I've got to get back to work...type at you later....
.

Ohsogreen,

I hear tht story often. I got tired of dealing with the heathen that sold me my smoke, so I learned how to closet stealth grow!
We both grew up with some great Music, great Concerts and some great dope.
REP+ for you,
Peace,

Roseman, Yes - I enjoyed my youth, the 60's was both a great time & a trying time for our country. I remember how shocked I was and how sad I instantly became - when JFK was killed. America would have moved forward at a better pace, with him at the wheel. But those that sat in high places, feared his change and took him out.
.
I fear, our new President will be the target of much Hate also. People always fear change, but change is necessary. Without it we can not move forward. I will pray for him, since he has a very difficult job to do. He's walking into a complete and total mess - the Bush years have damaged our country, terrribly.
.
Maybe we can convince the RIU Management to start a new forum, for stoners over 50. We could dicuss topics from music - (Real Music - like the Eagles, Jefferson Airplane, Zepplin, The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix and Bad Company, The Beatles), to Best Old Smokes (the hard to find : Haze's, Thai..etc..) and Politics (what we knew then & what needs to happen now) in the Greatest Country on the face of this Earth - The USA......
.
Well, I have to cut lunch short today. Thanks for sharing and don't go chasing rabbits - cause Mary, is so much kinder. LOL....
.
Keep it Real....& (Someday - by Alan Menken) will come around. Peace...

OHSOGREEN,
You take me back 30 or 40 years ago with your thoughts and words. And although I hate to even discuss politics, I agree with you 100%.
Visit here again soon and we'll chat,
Peace, bro

Yep that's me, 52 years young. Although not quite as old as you Roseman, I did grow up a long long time ago. lol Panama Red, Acapulco Gold, Window Payne, Thai sticks, Black Beauty's, etc.. Did them all, now I'm suffering. lol Actually, I'm in better shape now than 30 years ago. My only supposed vice is weed, and I'll continue till I'm dead.
If you think about it not much has changed in the world with regards to politics, religion and the lot. As long as man wants to control man we will never have the peace and love we deserve.
Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Dead, Lynard Skynard, Marshall Tucker, Hot Tuna, Zep, Doors, The Who, shall I go on? lol
I'm not getting older, I'm getting bitter.
Peace, talk at ya again soon.

I'm not as old as any of you, but I DID just finish reading my favorite Kesey novel, Sometimes a Great Notion. :D (Still bummed about Joby, always am.)

im only 21 :S

but feel like i would of been having much more fun in the 50's - 80's :D

You're young enough to be MY son, D.

There weren't microwaves back then, and I remember when Pong was the shit.

lol Shit, no A/C when I was a lad. lol The A/C was open the fecking windows and have fans blowing everywhere. lol

In the summer we would go to the movies cause they had air cooled theaters. So to get away from the hot humid shit you went to the movies with your crowd. Actually, it was a whole night out in the theater.

That's alright, D. The Old Hippies probably do, and could probably teach me a thing or two about 'em as well.

Google Kesey Further.

Mine as well at 44. But Wolfe really is one of my favorite authors... almost as good as Kesey. And this, coming from a woman who really doesn't care for fiction.

I did love my acid, though. Oh yeah, LOVED acid.

Acid had it's time with me also. lol Grass is a mild hallucinogenic. I get lots of flashbacks when I'm high now. Weellll, ok maybe not that many any more, but up until a few years ago, oh yeah.
