Oil cooled 600w hps, will it work?

ok where to start,

Im a bit of a mad scientist hence my latest project.

I have a 600w 6" cool tube in a 4' x 4' tent ATM but want to use C02 so want to remove nearly all the heat (dont we all?) and a cool tube dont cut it!

Mineral oil, rock oil or baby oil (same stuff different names) is a colorless oil that doesnt conduct electricity is non-reactive and has good thermal conductivity. It is lighter than water but has a higher viscosity so a standard pond pump should work.

Im going to be using 55mm pyrex tube with the 600w bulb mounted inside with 1/2" barbs on either end, a pond pump with 3+ meter head and a 1000w standard home radiator in an open loop.

So does anyone with more sense than me have any idea's?

E.g. wont or will work?

Things I dont know yet,
1. does a hps bulb need to get hot to fire and run?
2. how many lumens 5mm mineral oil will suck from the bulb?

What do you lot think?

They do it with computers but they use a container. The problem becomes the weight and actual amount of oil it takes to be efficient. I have heard of water colled lights so I guess it would be the same concept. Who knows might just work.

I think it would be a marvel to see, but it's not sounding practical, and actually inefficient. With the high power fans, a person should be able to control heat enough, you may just have to use less co2

not trying to burst your bubble but wouldn't an ac do it! and with all the pumps and radiator going to need something to cool the radiator i guess a fan would do but eventually it will start boiling the oil . not to mention what would happen if the pump fail or the lines start to leak. i think it would work but it will only maintain slightly less temperatures unless you can counteract the heat with cold but then you would need ac compressor. you will probably be able to maintain above room tempreature untill oil gets hot then basically its the same with out the system . a radiator only maintains a certain temp for the engine but its still almost 200d f i know computers use them too but i never looked into what they use and how it works but i am sure if you placed it in a cupboard it would probably run hotter.same with a car leave it running and the heat just keep going up then fan kicks in and its not as hot but still not cold! i know that there different temp ranges but same sense.wait is it a water cooled radiator that might work more efficiently. any how theres no harm in experimenting who know maybe you ll patient one day. how many fans you have on your cooltube?

Im building it soon! Got my parts list, my drawings and ordered the pyrex tube and copper plates for ends, already got 2 x 1/2 barbs.

Only thing im having trouble with is a bulkhead fitting that uses silcone instead of rubber as mineral oil messes with plasticizers and makes em swell up.

So prepared to be marveled! lol (well bout 8 weeks coz im in middle of "something")

As for practical and inefficient who knows yet!

I aint seen it done apart from on PC's and huge transformers and its very efficent at moving heat in these apps.

I have 1 x 6" 300cmf fan no filter just duct.

I think ya miss understood the bit about having a 1000w radiator (from a house) place this outside the grow room. My idea is to move the heat out in same way as a cool tube but the bulb will be imursed so the bulb wont get that hot

If it still gets hot make that 2 x 1000w radiator but I think 1 will be enough as its a 1000w output at 100 oC(water max) or so I belive as it states 1000w on box????

I would love a AC chiller but am VERY limited on power, hence passive cooling.

oh and a car motor is designed to run hot

You must post pictures in this thread whenever u get going I have to see this if it works you may want to tradmark it imeditly and talk to a large investment bank sng get a loan I would buy it if it worked, Professional PC gamers do it to their high end 2,000w Computers.

I will be doing a step by step guide on how I make it with pics and i'll use it in my tent to test my Idea. As for selling em I dout anyone would want one as changing the bulb will be messy and a real pain!

The main reson im making it is I want to use CO2 from my brew equipment in my tent so cant extract the heat with air.



This is my home made reflex still, it brews me 98% / 196 proof pure ethanol, that I drink and use for hash making! Gets ya so pissed ya can barely remember ya name!

Ok, I'm not trying to bash on your idea, which i think is extremely plausible, but don't you think it would be easier to just make your cool tube a "closed" unit, i understand your power limitations, but it shouldn't take much power!

Punk, I use 24 hour turbo yeast and sugar ATM I have still got to try makin proper spirit but because I over engineered my still I find it hard to distill any flavor through. :dunce:

Smokeslikebob, I put this up for someone with more knowledge than me explain why it wont work to save me building it to find out! I dont quite understand what you meen "closed" unit? If you meen draw in cold air from outside the tent and run through cool tube then out this is what I do now with a 6" 300 cfm inline fan, I found this less than adequate.... or maby I want to much?

Essex, I think you are on to quite a good idea. I however am very interested in your still. I am just now getting curious in home brewing and want to build my own still. I was wondering if you could supply the blueprint for your still as it looks very well made

I made ya a rough sketch as I just built it from my head,


size is 3m of 22mm copper pipe total. only use copper or stainless steel as aliminum will poison ya!

I think is a batshit crazy idea. Oil and red hot lightbulb just dont sound like a good idea to start. Second, the amount of light that gets through the oil would be less than the amount of light that gets through water, and they already have water cooled lights....and nobody uses them. If you are dead set on making this i would check and see what the water lights are doing for light emitted and then try and find out what the oil would be in comparison. It probably wouldnt be the best idea....for many reasons. An a/c unit would probably be a better idea. But fuck me, if you actually make this thing be sure to @ me in because id love to see it in action. ;)

Not the bulb sits in a tube-within-a-tube. The bulb never contacts liquids.

This would actually be submerging the bulb INSIDE the liquid and transferring the liquid to a chiller maybe. Like a PC. You could simply use a jar or a bottle to make this with some water tight fittings. I wanna try, maybe a good test with an incandescent would be a good idea? I don't have any of these materials.
