Oh Happy Day

I just found the benefits on having a very cluttered home office. I was going through some old shelves and found this.

Jar 10-4-2011 7-12-57 PM.jpg
This is a sealed mason jar with the air pumped out. This is how I store my weed and my smoke report of some weed that had been stored for two years is in my sig. According to the date, this was stored 4.5 years ago.

Opened 10-4-2011 7-13-12 PM.jpg
I cracked it open and was greeted by this lovely sight and an almost overpowering odor of cured weed. Seriously, the odor was almost to strong.

Shot of the jar dumped out. I don't even remember jarring this batch so I can't say for sure but the weed looks a lot darker than any weed I've jarred before. I think this is part of curing for so long.

There was only one way to proceed so I pulled out the bong. OMFG, this shit is narcotic. I'm pretty much smoke a little weed every day. One of the disadvantages is you usually don't experience that "hit in the face with a 2x4" stoned that an infrequent smoker will get.

I've taken two hits and am fucked up. So fucked up that I'm having a hard time finishing this post so I'm going to sign off and hit the bong again. I may be stuck in front of my computer all night. :)

So I ended up smoking a total of two small bowls and had the best sleep I've had in weeks. Hardest part was going up the stairs to bed. :)

wow. just read both your threads on long term storage. Thanks so much for writing them. Im about to start long term storage myself and i didnt know if it would hold up or not.
Ill look into different vaccumms but i suspect ill copy you.

Would you consider also shooting nitrogen into the jars as a non oxygen gas to fill the gap. Filling with nitro would remove even more oxygen i think.

Im considering long term storage as a value retaining asset through the next few years. I appreciate all your work here. thanks.

I think you'd have to choose between vacuum packing and using nitrogen. Not sure how you'd do both at once.

At what RH do you seal your jars?
If you're going to store for more than 6 months, I'd dry your weed a little more than normal. I usually air dry for a week or so, and then slow cure for anywhere between 2-4 weeks before I vacuum seal.

I was dabbling around with basic chemistry and learned something that reminded me of another thread that links here so I'll copy paste this.
For those of you that are into this sort of thing and happen to have the equipment and know how (I suspect some people here are at least interested in science if not actual college students) you don't need to buy an expensive N2 tank. Ammonium dichromate (NH4)2CrO7 when decomposed in a flask releases N2 and H2O in addition to the suspected carcinogenic chromium oxide ash volcano(youtube it, cool). It's cheaper than buying a cylinder of N2 if you only need a little and already have a few flasks and silica gel. Just scrub off the H2O and stray Cr2O3 crystals in an apparatus for a supply of pure N2. I'll give a small sample a long term storage trial once I eventually buy some ammonium dichromate. Heh, check back in 5 years.

A cheaper alternative would be vacuum sealing it with an oxygen absorber to capture any remaining O2 (you can make those cheap too). This method will not earn you as many cool points but is easier and probably works the same.

What about filling it with CO2, since its heavier than air you can just pour it in.. Then pump out the air volume. Mix vinegar and baking soda in a sealed bag that can expand... Shake it up with your hand gripping the open end to keep it closed, and turn it upside down to let the liquid out. Pour this gas into your jars.

Using CO2 might be even better and it is readily available. It will remove all O2, is heavy and easier to fill into a hermetic jar, and it does not appear to react with any of the cannabinoids (Any chemists out there please check that) so it sounds superior to N2 to me. I dug around a little to see what is used industrially and I found CO2 is used in vegetable and grain storage instead of N2. Toss a brick of dry ice in the bottom of a container before filling it with grain, simple as that. One could make CO2 from baking soda and vinegar in a 2 liter bottle and pipe that into your jars until it starts pouring over the edges, detected by extinguishing an inscent or something.
