Nutrient help?

hey guys, i was wondering about nutrients. I've never used them on of my plants but I've seen many good results from them. Can anyone tell me in which situations would i use nutrients (cloning, vegging, budding) and what nutrients do i use? Is there some kind of on/off schedule?
