thanks for the inputs and thanks for the link as well! if you top tho, does the main cola(s) get smaller? or are there 2 giant colas of the same size as if you didnt top? the reason i ask this is because my mentor never tops and he gets fat buds and fat yields. and there are a couple other grower friends of mine who also dont top.

I think that really depends on the strain. I grew a few crops of bagseed and topped two out of four. The two main colas seemed comparable to the plants that I didnt top and the topped plants had a higher yield, not double but quite a bit more.

Ok, let me try and explain this in my buzzed and drunk state.

You do not want to top your plants if you have plenty of height for growing. UNLESS this is your style. For me I like to let them grow naturally and do LST to them. No snipping, not trauma. Sometimes like my last harvest of only two monster momma's I let them grow all natural. I only slightly tied them down and up. I got a huge yeild per pant.

To each his own, and what he has or wants.

hahaha ... i remember seeing some 20,000 lumens thing. Like someone with $50 worth of CFLs wanting to know whether 20k lumens was a lot. but that was at least ... ten minutes ago. Long gone from the memory banks.

Advantages of not topping: Easier to manicure ... Good way to do side by side experiments using plants with different growing mediums, nutrients etc. ...hmm...

I think if your growing for yield, topping, LST and SP (selective pruning) are your bestest friends, topping is particularly god if ur taking clones anyway haha. All these methods do tend to require longer veg times tho, coz the plant takes a lil longer to adjust to having its head removed and such lol.

As for the cola question, that's strain dependent, some strains will have one big cola normally, then if you top it it'll have two half sized colas (added together to be the same as one large cola), however some strains when topped will grow two FULL sized colas, thus, doubling your yield. NOTE: If you find a strain that does this (even better if its a good pheno), then top away!!! I remember seeing this one plant, grown on the roof of this guys house in California, had 16 tops through topping and a little training (LST), every top FULL SIZE, it was huge, and in one fukn huge pot too haha! Wasn't a hugely potent strain unfortunately and one of these Indica dominant skunk hybrids that have become SOoO popular coz of their high yields and short flower period, I prefer good old sativas myself, but this plant was impressive as hell none the less. I wish I had the patients to do that haha.

Cheers!
