okay so as the title says this is my first post and i have a few questions i couldnt find the answers to. i know these questions have been answered before so if anyone could give me the links to the answers or answer them here i would be much obliged. and i apologize for my ignorance ahead of time.

1. when starting out with seeds is there anything you can do to have better odds of a female emerging?
2. why do you turn the plants upside down?
3. how do you tell the difference between indica and sativa?
4. how many plants should you start out with? (for a first timer)
any input would be appreciated

You'll get a myriad of different answers. Here's mine...

1- You can get feminized seeds. Other than that, I think it's a crap shoot genetically. I've heard that putting a banana near the sprouts after a few weeks may increase the female ratio. Bananas give off ethylene gas which is a plant hormone. But there's no scientific proof to get fems this way. Also, ideal environmental factors play a role. Lighting, soil, temps, etc.
2- Dunno. Never heard of that.
3- Indica is shorter/bushier with broad fan leaves. Sativa is more lanky with long, narrow leaves.
4- The number of plants depends on your grow space and lighting. I started with 1 and got lucky with a female. Maybe try 4-5. Odds are good that you'll get at least 2 females.

Check out the GrowFAQ. It has a butt load of good information.

First off, welcome!

Question 1: No. The sex of your seeds are predetermined.
Question 2: I have no idea.
Question 3: Indica = fatter leaves on short/medium plants. Sativa = thin leaves on medium/tall plants.
Question 4: Good question. I usually plant seeds equaling double the number of plants desired for harvest to account for males and hermaphrodites.

Good growing and good luck.
