Newbie in need of advice

I am new to medical marijuana use and growing. I have a spare bedroom where I will do my first crop the room is 11x12 and here are my questions.

1. Do I make this into two rooms divided with a tarp?

2. What lights should I get and how many?

3. Is it worth doing a few autoflowering plants to start?

4. Can auto plants be grown in same room as regular plants?

Any help is appreciated thank you!

I'm going to give you THE MOST SOLID advice you will ever read.

1. Read about tents.

2. Read about lighting options, positives and negatives to each -- including cost, efficiency, heat, etc.

3. Select the strains you want to grow, if you're not sure about auto-flowers, read about autoflowering strains, the positives and negatives.

I rep'd ya, because you asked solid questions for a new grower. The secret is to read and learn though, not to ask someone to walk you through set up and grow. If you wind up depending on this site for every bit of decision making, you'll wind up in the lurch with no idea where to go.

1. If you want to be able to veg while you have other plants flowering then you will need to divide the room and make sure it is truely lightproof. Just a tarp won't black out the light from a HID light so you might need a layer of Mylar with that or something similar.

2. Depends on what your expectations for yield are. You could fit plenty of light in the room it seems like..I would say to get a 1000w adjustable ballast that can be turned down as low as 600w'ish when you feel like it. You could also get away with just a 600w if you needs aren't too big. If you end up dividing the room then I would put between 4-8 bulbs(6500k) t5 flourescent fixture for the veg side. You definately want an HPS bulb running in your flower side.

3. Short answer: No.

4. Autoflowers would need to spend their entire life in the veg side of the room, with the lights running ether 24 hours a day or 18 on and 6 off if you wan't to save a little more money.

I know you are probably a bit intimidated by all of this and autoflower plants seem like they are a simple way to do a first grow, but I recommend just getting some feminized seeds instead. That way you don't have to worry about sexing the plants and can still get strong genetics. Do the research on any seeds that you are interested in throwing down money on and don't believe a word in the descriptions of them on the seedbank websites.

I might add that reading a few books on the subject will get you prepared for your new hobby in ways that are not as varied and opinionated as those you may encounter here and at other sites.

You really seem to want to prepare properly. Reading up will get you ahead of many and you'll tend to not be so worried about things that turn out to be nothing to some!
A cpl of simple suggestions.
1: Why divide the room? Get a 4x8 tent and do your vegging and propagation in that!
2: Again, read the books! Ed's book has all kinds of information on various lighting use costs. Not to mention that it gives the info on the factors of how to choose what type of lighting you need to fill your expectations. That should help you decide what type of lighting to buy and use.

You didn't mention if your spare room had carpets or not.

The spare room does have carpet, I have access to quite a few clones from a friend and also have access to a few different strains in seeds. I wanted my first grow to be in spare bedroom because this summer I will build a room inside my barn that will be 16x16x10 ft high and of course this room will be divided into two rooms each being 8x8x10.

You're either going to want to cover up the floors with plastic and raise the plants or grab tents or you'll have all kinds of humidity problems and all kinds of bacteria problems if you grow on carpet just fyi. I would probably grab a couple 4x8 tents for your room.

Thanks everyone for the advice given I took Dr. Who's advice and purchased all 3 books and downloaded them into my iPad now time to read thank u all.

You also need to look into insulation and guarding against mold.
