Newbie Cabinet

Newbie here,I built myself a cabinet measuring 54" wide 31" deep and 78" tall. It has a 8 lamp 4 foot T5 with a 12"x4" carbon filter mounted in the top with a 4" inline fan mounted on the outside with a silencer and the return or fresh air at the bottom. I had some questions if someone would be kind enough to share their experience with me. I've done a lot of reading and opinions vary. What is the most productive light schedule for veg 18/6 or 20/4?

I bought a Hurricane inline fan and it's a little on the loud side. I'd like to upgrade later to a quiet one,can I get some recommendations?

You can quiet down inline fans by placing them in a box and filling it with polystyrene pieces. Obviously you have to cut two big holes to have the in and outake. Also you can get insulated ducting that if you use with the box really works well. I got a 5" inline sounding like a mere pc fan.

Thanks,I might give it a try. I was looking at this fan TD-100XS.http://www.hvacquick.com/products/residential/Bathroom-Ventilation/Remote-Fans-for-Bath/S-P-TD-SILENT-Series-Inline-Fans
This cabinet is sealed up tight and will have 4 plants. If I'm going 18/6 can I shut down the fan during the 6?

Its best to keep airflow running durring the dark cycle, otherwise humidity can build up and cause stress to the plant. the leaves will start to cup.

I couldnt see a db value on the speccs of your fan, this is a useful piece of info. I noticed that 5" fans can be the quietest.

Yea,no db on the web site, box or manual. It has a 5 year warranty so it's not a piece of crap but it sure isn't quiet.

I had the inline fan fastened to the side with foam rubber at the connection but you could still feel a strong vibration if you put your hand on the cabinet. I remembered that I had a 25 foot length of insulated 6" flex duct in the garage so I went and got a couple 6" to 4" adapters and took the fan off the cabinet and put it in a closet and connected it with the insulated 6". Nice and quiet now, thanks for the suggestion.

Glad to help, if vibration is the main issue you could hang the inline fan and its ducting by 2 bungie cords, these days thats how I quiet my fan down. I used the box method when full stealth was needed.

Get a timer for the fan and have it turn off for an hour... back on for an hour... keep doing that for the dark period to get some fresh air moving in/around while keeping noise down a little bit. I had a 6'' vortex and it was a little loud starting up but once it got going it was quiet-er... only fan Ive ever used so I cant tell ya how it compares to others
