New us passports hacked !

For those of us who recently obtained one of the new credit card sized US Passports please read this Thread...

My source is PC WORLD, May 2010, page 67.

New US Passports have a RFID radio-responding chip that sends your personal ID Social Security (and who knows what other information) to a remote card reader as you enter back into the United States or any other location the Feds want to establish your identity via your Passport.

Just being 10 feet away from the reader is enough because identification is all done with radio frequencies. No need to insert your Passport into a reader, just hold it up from your car to the reader.

PC WORLD reports that Chris Paget spent under $250 for his off-the-shelf equipment and software that allowed him to simply drive down San Francisco streets hunting for RFID hits!

Within 20 minutes Paget had two US Passport information captured to his laptop!

I suspect with hi-gain directional antennas and pre-amps the range of the laptop and detector could be greatly extended too.

NOTE: Your Passport is shipped in a foil-clad card holder. KEEP your Passport in it and that should be enough to protect you. Apparently there are at least two people in San Francisco who didn't.

Next time I encounter a US border RFID reader I will first try flashing my card to the reader still in the foil packet? Is the foil holder enough shielding to keep my Passport from responding? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hope this helps you...

I have a older, larger passport too but I see no signs of a RFID chip installed? The older passports are quite flexible too so I suspect if there is a RFID chip embedded that it would be quite vulnerable to damage as well.

Perhaps it's the newer-older Passports that have them? I didn't get a larger Passport with my card-sized Passport so I can't tell you if the new larger Passports do?

I've attached a photo of a newer-larger US Passport and it appears to have a LOGO of a RFID chip on the front, but the logo appears to be imprinted because the textures agree with the blue background? I suppose a RFID chip could be somewhere inside though?

Perhaps someone with a new Passport (with logo) can tell us if they have discovered the chip location?

I remain,

Man every car, cellphone, and bank card has the RFID. Why the fuck would they start injecting metal components into the dermal layer of citizens? It would be too obvious. ;)

Peace

the best way to control money is to control how it is spent. control the money, control the people. we are being tagged like cattle and i find it sickening. bad thing is, the worst is still to come.

I agree that it is a bit sketchy, but there's a lot of bad information in this thread. Even if someone is able to pick up the radio signal, it doesn't allow access to any of your personal information. It just lets the immigration and customs people to access the information in their system without having to enter your information.
Also, this only applies to the new 'passport cards' that aren't actually passports. You can travel to mexico and canada with them, but you can't get on a plane. Now, if you've ever gone through a land border crossing into the US, you will understand why this sort of thing could be seen as helpful. It takes for fucking ever...

And if you have a regular paper passport, there is no rfid chip involved, so you have nothing to worry about.

Not to say that this is a good thing, but don't go all hysterical about it. That's all I'm saying...

Or just do this:

All passports issued by the US State Department after January 1 will have always-on radio frequency identification chips, making it easy for officials – and hackers – to grab your personal stats. Getting paranoid about strangers slurping up your identity? Here’s what you can do about it. But be careful – tampering with a passport is punishable by 25 years in prison. Not to mention the “special” customs search, with rubber gloves. Bon voyage!
1) RFID-tagged passports have a distinctive logo on the front cover; the chip is embedded in the back.

2) Sorry, “accidentally” leaving your passport in the jeans you just put in the washer won’t work. You’re more likely to ruin the passport itself than the chip.

3) Forget about nuking it in the microwave – the chip could burst into flames, leaving telltale scorch marks. Besides, have you ever smelled burnt passport?

4) The best approach? Hammer time. Hitting the chip with a blunt, hard object should disable it. A nonworking RFID doesn’t invalidate the passport, so you can still use it.

So your a terorrist and you want to come to the good ole US of A, but the summuna bitches will catch you before you even board a plane out. What to do? Now with new RFID theft technology (old news BTW) you can be anyone you want. You can have a new fake passport made up and the RFID chip that you made from the stolen info implanted into the false passport and wala..you are now Joe the plumber and not Akhmed Blowsyoutopiecesajad.

pure awesome. i will attempt a rep for this, although i think i may need to spread it around a bit first
I was only trying to outdo your shitshatapoopton, not sure if it worked or not. And the rep really isn't needed, it stopped making a difference 2562 points ago, but its still appreciated!
