New study: Exposure to LED not good for us

An interesting new article came out studying the affects of persistent exposure to LED light. The study finds that the blue spectrum of LED light can cause increased retina damage as opposed to other forms of light. It also can affect our sleep cycles. It is found to be "photo-toxic" and the harm is irreversible to the damage and aging process of our eyes. Frances government protection agency is revising the limit for "acute exposure" in a 400 page report. There is information about chronic exposure in lower levels as well.

Take away: It may be worth while for everyone to be utilizing quality sun glasses and avoid intense exposure to their grow lights. It goes without saying, but in light of the new data one should never look directly at LED diodes! ahhh :cool:

Newer study: exposure to sunlight not generally good for us either.

Honestly, you shouldn't stare at any light source for an extended time...Unless you want to win a Darwin award this year? lol

Sit in a dark sheltered room your whole life to keep your eyes truly safe.....I'm not.

Research like this is not new! It's already known since a long time that blue LED light and therefor white LED light too can damage your eyes. That's because of the high energy level of blue photons. They have almost as much energy like UVA photons...
Its really a good idea to wear sunglases or to dimm the light down when you visit your groom and for your other rooms it helps to use high CRI bulbs with a higher far-red part(95). Far-red warms up the skin and travels deep inside the skin and it works against the damaging effect of the blue photons. For this reason some of the healthyness gurus recommend to still use incandescent bulbs, lol! We here get only high CRI bulbs since this year(90 min.), CRI80 bulbs are no longer sold.
Did you know that CFL lights emit UVA light?
From a few inch distance you should not look into a CFL lamps too.
If you search long enough you'll find something bad for any type of artificial light. That's for sure...

Not pleasent to read, defintly a good idea on getting some shades for growing with Leds, plus they arent that expensive, plus you look cool...

Yep, this info has been out there for a while. Despite this My city has converted a significant portion of street lights to these hideous blue/white Leds. They really are unpleasant. Every now and then i find myself in areas where they still have the old hps fixtures, and i cant help but miss that that orange reddish glow. Something almost kind of romantic about that spectrum at night, lol.

That should work in parallel. The driver will give you onboard dimming with a screwdriver.

I know exactly what you mean! I always I loved the warmth it gives off.
It creates a somehow homely feeling like the warm white we use at home. If you like it try Blux Vero decor in 2500°k for your living room. I'm using decor series, 2700°k/CRI97 for my living room(Vero10) and I really like it. Digikey has vero10 and 13 in stock the last time I ordered them.

I can't open the digikey link because they block my vpn server but if its a double row f- or H-influx strip (or a single row 4 footer) and has more like 42v but less like 48v then you have the right driver. Simply connect the strips in parallel to still have the same voltage and the driver current is divided evenly by the number of strips connected.
Ah, I remember now! It's q-series, 43,5v at 450mA. An HLG-240H-48A has around 5,5A so with 10 strips each strip gets ~550mA. At this drive current a q-strip maybe needs 44v so multiplied by 5,5A you should have at least 242w net and 255w at the wall, maybe 260.
So, yeah that driver works! There is also no need to change the driver voltage. Better use the current regulator for dimming its far more exactly.
You could use a multimeter to set the driver voltage limit to 45v and add some kind of extra protection. But to reach that voltage at least 5 of the strips have to fail and thats very unlikely.
You could also use the HLG-240H-48B modell. It has no built-in regulators but a set of dimmer wires. You can use a cheap B100k potentiometer from e3ay or the rapidled 6$ dimmer, which is the better solution IMO. Rapidled has maybe a better price for the HLG-drivers too. And with 10 q-strips you are still above 50 bucks so still free shipping/no extra fees.
Believe me you will love the dimming feature because it al!ows you to inspect the plants without switching the light off. The colors will look much brighter than they are under intense LED light. So its really a useful feature!
Dimming also allows you to suspend the light always with the same distance and adjust only the brightness level. With an HLG-240H-48A you are limited to 50-100% dimming and you always need a small screwdriver to adjust brightness.
No "damned, where is this shitty screwdriver again" anymore with B-type drivers. Much more confortable.

Its what weve both done; it will work. You need to pick up some wagos or similar for parallel connections but yeah, it will work.
The driver supplies 48V which is higher than the 43something volts of the strips. See RBs response aswell.

Oh thanks man, I was panicking couldn't sleep , sending stuff back is a pain and drivers are heavy.
I have the 221-412 wagos will they work ? or do I need bigger like the 4 spot or 5 spot bigger ones?
It is tough getting stuff in Canada at a decent price i tell ya
soon as you out in Canada the price doubles sometimes.

Always limit time in room when lights are on ,any extreme bright light is bad for your eyes ,I’m creeping up on 60 been growing since I was fairly young and my eyes are about average for my age but I don’t spend a lot of time in my rooms , when lights are off is when I do my chores
