New Kid on the Block

Hi All

I an a newcomer to growing for the first time. I hadn't thought about it until i found 7 seeds in my last batch of grass. I thought that I would plant them and see what happened, i didnt expect any would actually sprout up. At this point I hadnt read anything online and planted them in non compost in a seed tray, with some parsley and dill to keep them company. After a few days I was thinking if i should just buy a small bulb and grow them. I ended up setting up a small 5ft cupbout with a 400w HPS bulb. With my cupboard setup I went and bought 5 more White widow seeds and they all at various stages atm.

I am 4 weeks in and I have one thats growing well, bout 16" high. another is a bit wonky but still growing, i think i must have damaged it when it was growing.. I am starting to think about sexing the plants and think i have at least one female, the biggest one :) Any advice is welcome.

in the photo i think i can see 2 pistils, as I havent seen it in a real plant before I still am not 100%. I know I will be able to tell for sure later but as this is my first grow I am eager to know what I have.

I will try to attach the photo :)

I will start keeping a little log of whats happening with my babies :P

Thanks for the comments on the photos etc.

- I am glad my 3week old photo looked good :)

I was using micarcle bloom soil from Asda and also a bag of 78p compost. As I said I started off not meaning to spend much money so my initial setup was crap at best. I bought perlite to add to the soil after reading on the forums. Now I have bought some blood fish and bone meal to mix into my soil when repotting etc.

I was looking at other photos online and my 4week old plants looked very bushy compaired to others so for better or worse I trimmed some of the leaves. I thought it would allow for better light to get to the new buds etc... Was I right to do this or was that a newbie mistake?

When should I start to think about flowering them? I have read that a plant can grow to 3x its height when flowering so being space concious I dont want to get too big. I am thinking about building a bigger cupboard but will need to wait and see.

I now have only 5 plants growing as 2 hardly grew and looked shit so I binned them. I thought they might die anyway so would rather focus on the others.

Currently I have;
2@ 4 weeks (unknown strain)
1@ 2.5 weeks (White Widow - feminised seeds)
2@ 2 weeks (White Widow - feminised seeds)

This is my biggest before I trimmed it down. I will take a photo in a few days to show the difference.

This site has been great! Full of wisdom :)

My first grow is going well with me just putting my 2 15/16" plants in darkness to start them flowering.

Smell is getting stronger too so gonna need to buy a carbon filter. Any one got a cheap recommendation please send it my way. I dont want to spend too much as this is my first grow and the lamp skint me :joint:

My 2 biggest are now bout 7/8 weeks old and 1 week into flowering, well they are kinda flowering now after giving them 36hours of darkness and moving from 18/6 to 12/12.

And right enough as you wise folk said they have almost doubled in size! I will need to start building a proper place to grow them as the half cupboard is almost too small. Will it cause the plants damage if they get near the 400w HPS? how close is too close?

The other plants growing are 2 white widow feminised seeds and I topped one of them but after about 4 weeks vegging so not sure if thats the best time. Anyways as it was a hassle moving the two biggest out of the cupboard so they didnt get 18/6 of light I put them into 36hours of darkness this weekend to force them to start to flower. It will save alot of hassle and as I want to go on holiday in July I am hoping they flower quickly....

Please leave me comments on the plants and if you know what the 2 biggest strains are please let me know as I dont know what they are :joint: except grass :P
