New Grower Questions

Hey Everyone,

My first ever seed is just popping through the soil, my second seed is germinating. I've done a bit of research online about growing but I still have questions I’m having trouble finding the answer to or understanding what they said. I'm not the smartest guy in the world and I’ve never grown anything except for a cactus when I was 8, but once I learn something I can usually pull it off. So, I found some seeds in my most recent donation, and decided to try to grow them. I don't know what strain they are; they are either Grape Ape, Lemon Kush or Alaska Thunder F'k. I have a rough Idea on some of these q's. Feel free to use grower lingo and I can ask if I don't understand.

What exactly is:
Autoflower, feminized seeds, regular seeds and will there be a point in my grow, if successful, to determine what damn strain I have?

All answers welcome! I'm sure I will have more questions and if you have any please post them so we can all learn.

Thanks :bigjoint:

rule number one !!!!!!

1. never grow adopted seeds on the assumption they will grow weed, they may turn out to be males.

2. male plants ( male cromosome) do not produce weed only seeds.

3. buy feminized seeds ( male cromosome removed and have female only) from a reputable dealer (seed bank) like attitude seeds.

4. these seeds will only produce weed when looked after properly.

5. they may cost you a lot but you only get what you pay for in this world, but do not buy mixed male and female seeds (regular).

6. do not buy female seeds (male and female cromosome) they can hermie which means turn male when stressed and produce seeds and weed.

7. read up on everything you can. that is the best way to learn.

8. if you are serious about being the best and producing the best weed in the world then studying will be the best place to start.

the worst weed farmer in the world, is the farmer whos crop you can smell, read about negative room pressure, and remember that carbon filters only filter the stinky old smells outside, so your neighbours cant smell it when it reaches the open air, they do not stop smells in your grow room or home, this is where negative pressure comes in.

negative pressure is when a room has a very large fan blowing air outside through a carbon filter.
and a medium size fan drawing air in, the large fan tries to suck the walls, floor and ceiling in because the smaller fan is not providing enough air for it, (like sucking hard through a straw), the room has to provide air for the larger fan through every single crack or little hole it has and these little holes will start to suck air in, that way no smell can ever escape except through the large fan, only fresh air can ever be drawn in, the carbon filter scrubs the smells on the exit fan and your neighbour smells nothing, and neither does your little old auntie who visits you at the weekend.
use insulation to dampen noise and hide heat from heat seeking flir cameras and nosey parkers.
do you understand ?

good luck and gods speed my friend.

Male plants do NOT produce seeds.
FEMALE plants produce seeds...... When pollinated by a male.

Bag seed is a great starter.... Unless the Mother was a hermie. Then you will produce herm plants.

If it's simply pollinated by a male...(regular seed) you have a 50/50 chance of producing a male or female.

Autoflower- a strain that flowers under ANY light cycle automatically and can never be cloned.
feminized- a strain guaranteed to be female from seed. usually from a female plant that self pollinates.
regular- (the best) can be either male or female BUT you get to pick phenotypes as each plant has multiple variations. for example my blue widow could be MUCH different from your blue widow even though they are from the exact same seed company and mother plant.

as far as knowing exactly which strain you have... is pretty much impossible. just call it something you want.

wrong information here....

1.) how can you tell him to buy feminized seeds but not female seeds? these are the same thing....
2.) regular seeds are MUCH better, you get to choose the phenotypes of your females AND get to collect pollen from your males ( in seperate grow space of course ) to pollinate with other strains to create your own, which is THE MOST fun you can have growing.
3.) as Sx said, males produce POLLEN which can pollinate females which in turn creates Seeds.

I wouldnt be advising a newb start using regular seeds. choose phenos of females, and collect pollen from males, way too complicated. Yes its fun creating your own strain im sure, however op should concentrate on keeping life simple, start with feminised seeds and concentrate on getting to grips with the basics first. I think thats what weegogs was implying.

Loneweedman, keep it simples get some feminised seeds and you cant go far wrong.

Not much difference when growing regular seeds vs. feminized seeds, besides the Obvious fact that one is guaranteed to be female. only 1 extra step in the growing process, Sexing. i don't think its to much extra work nor would it complicate things for him in my opinion. We all have to learn by trial and error, forums only teach you so much.
So to the OP i say, good luck with those seedlings, sexing is a fun experiment and keep us posted.

The reality is that dealing with sex is one of the things that
new growers have to learn how to deal with.

You can just pop more seeds than you needs plants, put them
all into flower, and toss the males when they show.

You can also wait for pre-flowers on plants in Veg. This takes a
lot of patience, but they do show in time.

Or you can put them into flower, and then re-Veg a female to
take clones once the sex shows.

This is all great stuff, but I have to agree that femmed beans
are the best route for new growers, all other factors being equal.
....this just lets them focus on soil, nutrients, etc.

Take care,

JD
