New grower and newbie. Need help and advice please!!!!

Hey everyone!
My name is Ash and I’m new to the cultivation culture and would love to learn everything about it. I’m a new grower and just recently started my first plant so i apologize in advance for this long post. I need guidance on how to maintain my plant and take good care of it to have good quality bud so I can start growing multiple plants at once. I had questions regarding a few different things and would love some advice as I’m a newbie to this so it would be great if you can help me out and explain things to me as if I’m a 5 year old. Heres a list of everything I have at the moment:
  1. Vivosun 36x36x72 tent
  2. Phlizon 600w led lights ( turned on during veg & flowering only)
  3. Oneo 100w led lights (turned on during all stages)
  4. 2 vivosun 4 inch 203 cfm fans with speed controllers & carbon filter (for intake & outtake fans. The intake is at the bottom and the the other fan releasing air outside is located at the top)
  5. Promix hp soil
  6. Taotronics cool mist humidifier
  7. 6 inch clip fans
  8. 3 pack with calmag general hydroponics nutrients
  9. Ph up & down kit
  10. Ph testing kit
  11. Tds meter pen
  12. Preciva digital ph meter
  13. I also have a dwc hydroponic system that I’m not using but if its easier to use let me know and i’ll set it up. Alfred horticulture 5 gallon
  14. 3 inch pots to use incase I need something smaller than what came with the dwc system
  15. Rockwool cubes
I started my plant in the soil on march 25 in a red solo cup and heres how I’m maintaining it so far. Not a lot of watering because I know seedlings don’t need a large amount. My water ph was above 7 before and that was my fault but i just started watering with ph 6-6.5. I water maybe once every 2-3 days until soil is dry an inch deep and light in weight. No nutrients being fed either. Heres a list of details of what my setup is like

-Humidity is set between 55-70 when lights are on & off
-Temperature is set between 23-30 Celcius
-Light schedule: 18-6. Lights come on at 9 pm and switch off at 3 pm using a timer. Lights are located 12-16 inches away from the plant and adjust as it grows
-The small 6 inch fans are on at all times. One is located on the ground the other is at the top.
-Intake & outtake fans are being used while lights are one as temp goes over 30 celcius if theyre off and they turn off when lights turn off. Theyre connected to the same timer as the lights

So right now it seems like I’m having issues with my plant and would like to know what exactly I’m doing wrong. 1st issue I noticed is that the perlite in the soil is turning orange. 2nd issue is that the leaves are curling down from the tips as well as the sides instead of being flat. 3rd issue is that the tips look as if theyre burned and turning yellow.

I did some research and learned that it could be nitrogen toxicity, underwatering/overwatering. I’m not really sure tho how it could be nitrogen toxicity if I haven’t given it any nutrients yet. This will be the fourth week.

The help that I’m looking for would be guidance on how to fix these issues and help with the nutrients. I have no idea how often to feed them and then water them like I’m so clueless. If someone who has experience with the same nutrients I have please let me know how often you feed and how often you water without feeding and how much I should use. I’ve been reading that its recommended to start with half the amount that’s recommended on the package. Still need help with schedule. I will be transplanting to a 14 inch pot which I believe is 7 gallons.
Please also let me know if theres anything that I should change about what I’m doing or my setup. Here are some pics as well to help you visualize what I’m working with. Thank you all in advance and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Not sure I can help but here's some questions/comments.

You mentioned you were using pro-mix hp soil, does that contain any fertilizer? I would assume by this point you should be feeding your plants. I grow in coco so it might be different, but by four weeks, I'm feeding every time I water with a 1.0 to 1.4EC solution. It looks like your pro-mix might be sphagnum peat moss, perlite, and lime so I think that classifies as a soil less mix.

From the photos you posted my initial reaction was overwatering and nutrient burn. It looks like that's incorrect based on the description of your watering/feeding habits. Do your solo cups have sufficient drainage? Have you check the EC of the water you are using? I'm wondering if you have a pH issue from your watering frequency or the lime in the promix.

Here's what I would suggest:
  • Start feeding your plants if your soil doesn't contain fertilizer (check the feed schedule for early veg on your fertilizer line)
  • Make sure your cups have good drainage. Water until you get ~20% runoff
  • I like to water when my pots get light, but I don't like to let them dry (i'm in coco though). It does sound like you are waiting too long between watering though, dry soil an inch down on a small solo cup is pretty dry. At this point, the root system should have fully explored that cup and I wouldn't consider the plant a seedling. I feel like letting the medium get too dry causes pH and EC issues

That plant has been over watered. Over watering will eventually lead to several symptoms all at the same time. The symptoms will appear to be several different deficiencies and toxicity.

30C is too high of a temperature, so that's likely aggravating the problem. Get that down to 25-26C (78F).

Put another cup, and fill it with dry soil. Next time you check the plants, compare the plant pot weight with the dry soil one. When the plant feels similar in weight, water. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Also, when watering, ensure that the water is at 6.0 pH for your medium (soil-less peat). You need to start feeding nutrients as well. Mix the nutrients at half strength of what the manufacturer recommends, then pH the mixture, again to 6.0.

I'd start off feeding every other watering until the plant starts looking a bit better. Post back with the results after a few days go by after stabilizing things.

Hey everyone!

Quick update since my last post. I transplanted the plant to a 7 gallon pot and fed it the nutrients 6 days ago so that would be Sunday the 19th

-humidity: 50%-70%

-temperature: 22-26 degrees C

-both lights were on but noticed that it increased the temperature by a bit and reduced the humidity so now i only have the 600w led with veg switch on

-nutrients were mixed in a gallon of water. 2.5 ml of micro, 2.5 ml of gro, and 1.25 ml of bloom (half the recommended dosage) and im following a drain to waste schedule system. I fed the plant the full gallon but it seems like that was too much as the medium is still moist and will probably have to water it tomorrow

-im following a feed/water/feed schedule

-ph before water was 6.0 and 5.7 for the runoff water

my questions so far are:

1.The dtw schedule that I’m following says 500 ppm. I’m using half doses should I match it to be 250 or 500? It was 311 when I mixed my nutrients and added it to my soil.

2.my exhaust and intake fans are on while the lights are on to maintain the right temperature otherwise, it will rise to almost 30C. should i change the timer for the fans to come on just for an hour a day or once every 3 hours kind of thing or is it fine to just leave it on while the lights are on? Ive been hearing different answers thats why i want to check. They’re both 204 cfm with speed controller

3.i didnt use calmag with my first feeding. Should i add it next time i feed or just with watering? just hearing different things

4. i feel like a gallon was too much for the plant, should i just give it half a gallon next time or just feed/water until theres 20-30% runoff? just getting a lot of different answers and looking to confirm which is best

5.i only have my 600w LED lights with veg & flower switches on. should i turn the other full spectrum 1000w LED lights i have or leave the 600w on only?

6.i havent watered/fed the plant for 5 days now but i will water it tomorrow. is 6 days without feeding or watering too long or is it because it might have been over watered?

Based on the pictures, can you please also let me know if theres anything that im missing and what should i fix. Appreciate you all and thanks in advance

Here are some pictures

When transplanting you don't need to saturate all of the soil until the roots start to fill the new container. This could lead to overwatering.

1. What are you using as a water source. Whatever you add to your water will increase the initial ppm.

2. I run my fans 24/7. It helps keep the humidity in check and if you're concerned about odor and your using a carbon filter your going to want to keep your tent under negative pressure

3. Calmag requirements are strain, water source, and fertilizer dependent. You have lime in your soil mix which is calcium carbonate, not sure if it's dolomitic lime but it should help with the calcium at least. RO water might be more likely to require calmag. Tap varies a lot. I tend to only add calmag if my plants look like they need it.

4. I water until runoff once a plant has been established in its container. After transplanting i slowly increase the volume of water. The runoff recommendation is applicable once the roots have spread through the container.

5. Is that 600w or 1000w equivalent or actual watts (at the wall)? I tend to aim for 35 to 50W/sf (actual power) unless i can't manage the temperature or I'm noticing bleaching or stress.

6. Six days would normally be a long time but your container was saturated before the plant was ready so it's probably ok. Just work your way up to runoff. When i recommended it, you were still in solo cups.

It does look like your plant is perking up. Once those roots fill out i bet the growth will pick up quickly.

whats the benefit of negative pressure?
That only happens if I’m not running my intake fan but it kinda gets too much.

3. Calmag requirements are strain, water source, and fertilizer dependent. 1. I’m currently using tap water. Do you recommend something different?

2.whats the benefit of negative pressure?
That only happens if I’m not running my intake fan but it kinda gets too much.

3.so its not recommended to use calmag or should I just add it with my nutrients? Like I said I’m only using tap water unless you recommend something that’s better for a marijuana plant

5.so I’m not experienced with the wattage and all that I’m still learning about it but when I ordered them that was next to the name of the brand so I’m assuming equivalent not actual power not really sure but if you’re interested in finding out the brand names are in my original threat post.

1. Everyone's tap water is different, that's the only reason I bring it up. There's nothing wrong with tap if it's decent quality. Tap or well water can have high ppm. Water softeners can put large amounts of salt in your water. My water comes out of the tap around 50ppm. It's good water to build off of but probably doesn't have a high alkalinity so it doesn't buffer well and sometimes requires additional calcium.

2. There's benefit to continuous airflow such as humidity control and air circulation but the negative pressure comment was around odor control. If you're using a carbon filter and you turn your fans off the room may start to stink. negative pressure ensures air is getting discharged where it should and all those little air leaks in your system are drawing in air.

3. A lot of people probably use calmag without issue. I find it's easier to dial my setup in if I keep it as simple as possible. I try to avoid additives unless I need them. If you start seeing signs of Ca or Mg deficiency you can add calmag, there are probably good examples of each of those deficiencies on this forum for reference. It will be a lot easier for you to figure out what works and what doesn't if you minimize the number of variables.

5. I did a quick search for your 600W light and it sounds like it's really only drawing 108W. Probably why the description say perfect for a 2x2 area. The minimum amount of light that I've seen quoted per square foot is ~32W/sf. You should have about 288W for your 3x3 tent. I would keep all the lights on unless you can't manage the temperature or see bleaching or some ill effect.

1. so when i measured mine, i just poured it in a glass and measured it with my ttds pen, it was 48 ppm and i dont know if thats good or bad. do you mind explaining to me what does that indicate? for example whats the ideal ppm for tap water and if its lower or higher than that number then what does that mean and how can you fix that?

5. the temperature was 27-29C when both lights were on. What would you recommend to bring it down? more fans?

Thank you so much for replying back btw im really learning a lot from what you're suggesting.

1. 48 ppm is pretty low so your water sounds like it has low levels of contaminates. A TDS meter measures the electrical conductivity of the solution and tries to convert it to total dissolved solids in ppm. Keep in mind different tds meter manufacturers have different conversion factors for EC to ppm so you can't compare ppm values without knowing that conversion factor (mine is 500 ppm = 1 EC). Without a water test we can't say for certain what's in your tap water but the ppm is low so there isn't much of whatever it is. Given your low ppm tap water you might be more likely to need calmag but again that will be strain and fertilizer dependent. I would look up the symptoms of calcium and magnesium deficiencys so you know what to look for and hold off until you need it.

5. Your upper temperature is a little warm but i would expect you could still grow at that temp. I'm suprised it's as high as it is given the lights your running and the size of your tent. What's the temperature differences inside vs outside your tent? If there's a large differences try to improve your air exchange rate. If ambient is close to your tent temperature there's probably not much you can do without an ac.

get the lights a little closer but not too close and give them something to eat for god sake...and i usually feed once a week or ten days in weg and of course water when dry and the pot is light

1. Thank you so much for this explanation. sorry if i seem uneducated with all this, im trying my best to improve and get better with all the terms and anatomy of the plant.

5. so when im running just one of the lights the temperature is always ranging from 23 to 26 degrees C. When i have both on, thats when the temperature rises over 27 degrees C. the difference between outside vs inside is 1 or 2 degrees. so you recommend bringing the temperature down by having a small ac inside? my fans are not oscillating theyre just still, could that be the problem? im also using an intake fan to bring fresh air from outside.

Thanks again and looking forward to hearing from you

Get rid off the humidifier if thats what it is in the right top corner, for a few days and see what happens..it seems to me its directly puffing over the plants. Just go with the misting every day lightly over the canopy. good luck

5. Yeah if you're only seeing a 1 to 2C difference between the inside and outside of your tent you'll need a way to cool or vent the room the tent is in. Or move it to a larger/ cooler area.

Quick update since my last post. I transplanted the plant to a 7 gallon pot and fed it the nutrients 6 days ago so that would be Sunday the 19th

6.i havent watered/fed the plant for 5 days now but i will water it tomorrow. is 6 days without feeding or watering too long or is it because it might have been over watered?
You transplanted 6 days ago but haven't watered for 5 days? Did you water after the transplant and water again the next day? It appears from the last photo that they are still over watered. There is no need to mist the plants or topsoil. Also a gallon of water for a plant that size is too much.

yeah thats correct I just watered it 2 days ago with half a gallon of water pH set at 6.0 and will feed next time it dries then water, etc. i watered the red solo cup then i was advised to transplant and then i water again the new pot and thats when i overwatered it and couldnt water it for 6 days.

I decided to water my plant using half gallon as a gallon was too much. Last time I watered her was April 26 and its still a tiny bit moist so I’ll have to feed tomorrow once its dry and use less water next time. This was the result, curling/claw looking leaves and the tips of the leaves are also soft and wrinkley. Is this issue still due to overwatering or nitrogen toxicity? The last time I fed her nutrients was on April 19th and it was half the recommended dosage. My humidity ranges between 45-70% temp 24-27C. pH is at 6.0. run off was 5.7 when i was feeding and ppm was 300. Can someone help me fix this issue please

I have a feeling it might still be some effects from overwatering. I would give it a little time, reduce the amount of water given per watering so you can water on a more regular basis. Once the plant is bigger you won't need to worry much about overwatering assuming you have adequate drainage.
