Thanks for that. I read in another thread somewhere on here that it's best to avoid watering to runoff with organic soil / not adding nutrients so that you don't lose the nutrients. If I water to a small amount of runoff that is caught in a tray and allow the plant to reabsorb it, will the nutrients reabsorb as well? Do I need to worry more about mold or mildew or anything with the water sitting in the tray?
When I see water starting to come out of the bottom of the pots, I stop. There’s probably not more then a half cup in the tray. That water is gone back up to the roots within a few minutes, so they are certainly not sitting in water, and whatever nutes are present then go back with the roots. No standing water, so no mold or mildew. You will get the hang of it.

I think you have the room to let them go another 7-10 days in there, if you have the stuff throw them in 5's and they should fill that space nicely once they stretch. Good luck, keep'm green :)
Hi GroErr, it's been seven days today. I've been watering a bit less (in part necessitated by going out of town a few days for my niece's graduation) and the plants seem pretty healthy; vertical growth seems to have slowed somewhat but horizontal growth and new nodes have increased. The plants were about 12" high when you'd responded to my last post, and are a bit taller but also wider with additional nodes. I don't completely understand how my plants are going to respond when I flip them to flowering - I know they might grow 2 - 3 times in height, but what do they do horizontally? It seems if they continue to grow horizontally things might get tight.

Above are a few pix I took earlier today.

They look ready to flip now, nice colour & healthy. They will expand out as they stretch and fill the tent wall to wall plus height of course.

Excellent - thanks!! Oddly none of the local garden stores in my home town had 5 gallon pots yesterday, so I ordered some from Amazon Prime that should be showing up today. I'll probably transplant tomorrow - is it OK to flip right after transplanting or should I wait a day or two?

My plants veg until about 20-22 inches tall (400W bulb) then they get moved to the flower room with a 1000W bulb. Most plants on this schedule will double in height while flowering. All my plants finish in 3 gallon pots and finish around 48 inches. So let your headroom determine your pot size and veg time. If I veg until 30 inches I get a 5 footer. Again in 3 gallon pots.

Good luck, BigSteve.

You can buy 5 gallon buckets at WalMart for a couple of bucks. Just remember to drill drain holes in the bottom.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Looking good in there, spreading out to fill the space, you may want to raise that fan a bit to keep the airflow even.

Thanks GroErr! Yeah, that fan is driving me a bit nuts and working in the 3' x 3' space is more constraining than I thought it would be. I think for my next grow I want to build out a simple box that's at least 4' wide and at least a foot taller, and with more / better options for mounting things like fans to the structure. I was planning on getting a small tower fan, but I don't think I have space to place it.

Yeah tents can be a bit of a pain for space, but many do it, have to get creative with making mounts and the like. Dollar store can be a great source for gardening supplies, you just have to throw on your Maguiver hat and cruise the aisles, always seems to be an alternative in there. Hooks and the like can be used to mount to poles, velcro straps, wiring etc.

Waiting, waiting, waiting - 21 days into flower. I have never been a patient man. This is forcing me to be patient. It is reminding me of my college days when I rode a motorcycle. I was gifted an old piece of junk Yamaha 650 that wasn't running, and my roommate at the time was a physics major and pretty big biker. He had a nice collection of Harleys, Triumphs, Indians - a lot of great bikes. And he was a great mechanic to boot. While he worked on his bikes he would give me lessons on how to get mine running. I'd get one or two lessons a week, and then he'd set me loose to try and do what he showed me on my bike. I'd get stuck, and have to wait until he had time to show me the next step. I finally got the damn thing running, and the last thing I needed to do was reattach the chain. The manual for my bike said I needed a specific tool to secure the chain, but my roommate didn't have one and used some pliers instead. I took the bike on its maiden run in Portland Oregon, and coming out of a traffic light I popped the clutch and - the chain came off. I walked the damn bike uphill for about 15 blocks back home and after the two month mechanical project said fuck it and bought a perfectly functioning Kawasaki 750 from a friend the next day.

It was the last time I was anywhere close to being patient. I will have to learn again.

Anyhow, here's the girls today as I sit patiently waiting.

Lol, that's why I outsource my mechanic work, no patience for that kind of stuff. Patience is something you definitely need with gardening though, the worst decisions are made in haste. They look great and right about on point in their maturity for 3 weeks in, looks like you'll have some bud if you just keep doing whatever you're doing.

Thanks GroErr! I'm just trying to stay the heck away from them so I don't do something stupid at this point. Fingers crossed and forced inner serenity...
