New grow room coming up

Hello everyone I am putting together a grow room out of a spare bedroom we have. Since its my first time I was hoping to get some advice on lights, ventilation, temperature and perhaps some ideas on how to lay out the room. My experience is absoloutley zero, but im very experienced at consuming the plant

What I want to accomplish with this room, I want to have space for 2 motherplants, a vegetative area and a flowering area. The drying will be done in a seperate room inside a sealed off grow tent.

So lets begin with the room! Its in the second floor of our house, the roof of the room is part of the house so the room has a low end and a high end (pictures later will show).

How do you figure out cubic feet of the entire room when the roof is at an angle of what I can see with my eyes to be almost a 45 degree angle.

5.7 feet wide
14.43 feet long
7 feet tall (High end)
3.5 feet tall (Low end)
From the low end to the high end theres a 5.25 feet length.

Heres what Ive thought of so far, on the right side of the green line I will make 1,7 Feet wide, 3.5 feet tall (On the low end) and 4.75 feet tall (On the high end) growbox on that entire side all the way up to the roof. On this side I will have the 2 mother plants and a good row of space for vegetative plants. I was thinking of running 2x 125 watt cfl for the motherplants. 3x 250 watt cfl for the vegetative area.

On the left side of the green line this is where i thought id put the flowering area. This space will be 4 feet wide and 14.43 feet long and I also have to include the space I will need to work around inside of that area. I was thinking of putting up 2x 600 watt HPS and maybe a 400 watt hps if it is needed. (Because of the length of the room).

I will line the entire inside of the room with panda plastic, and i will build the growbox from scratch my self.

So what im wondering is, how big of an exhaust fan would i need to vent out nessecary heat and humidity and keep a flow of fresh air there. (The exhaust will be above the window through ventilation duct to the outside. On the other side of the room there will be intake holes down on the floor.) Keeping in mind im also going use a carbon filter aswell for the smell.

Do I need all the lighting that I have thought of my self, I have no experience with growing, this is my first time ever and I dont really know how much light i need so im just going out on a limb with these thoughts.

I live in norway so we have about 2 months a year where the temps may go upto 30 degrees celsius for maximum 1 week. Its a slow scale up and down from the high point in those 2 months. what im wondering here is, can the exhaust fan get rid of all the extra heat produced by lights during the warmest part of the year. (week 3 or 4 in july). Or will I need to put in a AC to keep it down during that part?

Any ideas you might have on lights, ventilation, temperature or layout of the room. Perhaps I forgot something, please mention

Im a total noob so any advice is gold for me and hopefully I can soon share my grow diary with you guys!

WASSUP...
I AM NO EXPERT BUT HERE IS MY INPUT....
YOU CAN DEFINETELY GROW MORE THAN 2 GREAT PLANTS

ALWAYS KEEEP YOUR

TEMPS:75-90

LIGHTS: 200 WATT PER PLANT CFL------150 HPS( AVERAGE VEG & FLOWER)

VENTILATION: LARGE EXHAUST YOU SAY?? GREAT!! WITH MORE PLANTS AND MORE LIGHTS YOU NEED MORE FANS BLOWING IN THE ROOM . INTAKE,EXHAUST, WHATEVER YOU CALL IT!! FANS WILL ALWAYS KEEP PLANT COOLER THAN ROOM TEMP

REGARDLESS OF WHAT ANYONE SAYS--THERE IS NO REQUIREMENTS TO MEET

KNOWING THAT MARIJUANA PLANTS NEED EXTRA CARE FOR GREAT RESULTS ,,,
IT WILL BE CLEARLY VISIBLE IF YOU NEED MORE LIGHTS / SPACE / TIME.!!! YOU WILL NEVER NEED LESS
AFTER ALL OF THIS IS TAKEN ACCOUNT FOR
ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO REALLY WORRY ABOUT IS OVER / UNDER FEED.

Im sorry i didnt make this more clear. There will be 2 motherplants wich I will take clones from, supporting my grow. Those clones get moved to veg, stay there untill I am satisfied with size. And then put into flower.

Since I have no idea how to calculate the cubic feet of this room because of angles etc I am having a hard time calculating the size of exhaust fan and I also want to have an effective light setup, where i dont burn unnessecary energy. Plants can only absorb so much light, at a certain point youre just wasting light i have read around.

maybe im overthinking thing, i dont know. All i know is I want it to be effective clean and problem free. And perhaps deal with some issues in advance!

Peace

Hey man first off welcome to RIU, the fact that the room has a slanted roof isn't too much of an issue. All you need to do is work things out first, if I were you I would draw out your space both as a birds eye view and as an elevation (looking like forwards at the space through the door) so that you can draw you equipment in there with estimates for plant heights and stuff just to make sure you don't end up wasting space or overgrowing your area. Obviously I suggest you use the short side of the room for clones and you probably have to get the mothers up in the tall end because they won't stop growing. Veg could be pretty easily be put in the middle of the room and yeah you know flowering has to take up most of the space because of the stretch in the first few weeks. I think that 2 600W HPS bulbs will do for flowering easily. For the clones though I would just use T5's and then have a 200W CFL for the two mothers, should easily be enough. What method were you planning on using like did you have any ideas on whether you wanted to go with soil or hydro or coco or anything? Have you thought about maybe growing with a screen of green? I would highly suggest a method like that or vertical growing with your plants surrounding your lights as you can get the most from your light with these methods, if you had a scrog you would easily be able to manage space. By the way the 600W are good because they are the most efficient HPS bulbs and if you have a dimmable ballast you can just dim it down a bit if it burns too hot. You'll definitely need a pretty hefty ventilation system and honestly you'd probably thank yourself in future if you had an AC unit but it isn't totally necessary. But yeah the more you know whats out there the better your decision will be on which way to go I would suggest watching jorge cervantes ultimate grow 2 (you can find it on youtube) just because it has a lot of examples of different methods and things you can do. If you want help with any of this stuff though I'm not a genius or anything but id be happy to help you plan things out a bit just send me a message. Anyway good luck with your grow man!

Heyo, thanks for being so informative ;)

Im planning on running everything in soil besides the clones (rockwool). And I was also thinking of putting up a scrog in the flower area. Not sure of this is a good idea when they are vegging, i imagine flipping them over to flower could present problems, since i dont veg and flower in the same space. Or is a scrog easily removed when the plant has grown into it?

Ventilation on the other hand is something im having a hard time grasping. How do i even begin calculating the size of the room with a slanted roof? I see the words cfm and move all the air in the room out every 3-5 minutes, mentioned many places. What happens if I have an exhaust fan that is too powerfull, and it creates too much air flow? If thats even possible. Negative pressure i belive its called. Can that pose a problem aswell?

Also couldnt i put up a scrog for the motherplants and keep the short and have them stay on the slanted side of the room? The lowest part of the roof is 3.5 feet.

Nah your not going to have issues with over ventilating don't worry haha. You could Scrog the mothers to keep them short but they'll start to take up a lot of floor space over time. With the scrog its better as I learned to grow them into the scrog in veg rather than flower it just makes it easier, you would have to move the screen with the plants though so that might be a pain and I managed to grow mine into the screen just during flower but i think it would work better if I had started earlier. Removing them from the screen would be the biggest pain in the ass ever though. If you call the angle on the slanted roof actually 45 degrees then you calculate the size of the room with the slant and half the number you get to account for the slant. Soil is good though it should be easier than hydro, go to the organics section and ask about soil builds though cos I don't know enough to really help you with that cos I grow in coco. 3.5 feet is small enough that you'd have to Scrog them though. Also remember that whatever your measuring they will have less space than that because you'll have to hang lights, thats another reason T5's would be good for the short side of the room because they won't take to much space height wise.

So im looking for t5 bulbs and fixtures they go into, since I live in norway i prefer ordering from norwegian stores to avoid shipping through customs and keep the mission stealth. Because of this my options for buying lights are slim. The only fixtures available with more than 4 bulbs are 24watt making it 96 total watt per fixture, should I fill up the vegetative growbox with 3 of these or look for higher watt bulbs and fixtures? Also is there any manufacturers that produce good quality t5 i should be aware of?

3 of them should be enough for your veg space, how many plants were you thinking of growing? Because if its just for yourself you shouldn't need too many and then id say you could honestly do with just 2 of those fixtures. And about manufacturers I'm sure people have their preferences but Im pretty sure it won't make much of a difference, you might be able to find cheap ones that break quickly or something but honestly it'd probably be fine. Also just out of curiosity have you thought about what strain you want to grow yet?

I have already planted 2 mothers, crystal queen and chupacabra. Got feminized seeds from some friends that went to amsterdam and belgium. Crystal queen had become a woman :). Chupacabra im still waiting to see, only planted her 2 weeks ago.

As for who I am growing for that will be friends and family. So quality first then yield.

The nutrients i am using are general hydroponics flora series. Crystal queen i have feed twice and chupacabra once and I am following the GH nutrient schedual. Just cutting it in half for ease of transition.

Some pictures taken on june 17. The first picture is chupacabra and the second picture is crystal queen. I will take a few shots tomorrow when the lights are on.20150617_131530.jpg20150617_131538.jpg

And hell yes i have thought of strain, i got my eye on diamond girl. Smoking for some time can cause tolerance issues and when I went to Amsterdam 4 years ago I had built up a crazy tolerance, and somehow that strain Diamond girl just knocked me off my ass and made me trip balls so Id really like some seeds of that strain. Other than that ive only thought of buying autoflower seeds so I can plant some weed outdoors, the light cycle is very weird in norway so when the lights outside are 12/12 the temperature that follows is maybe 5-10 degrees. But since we have these major fields outside our house just waiting for me to fill them up with weed it seems like a shame not to use them. And maybe do a pure weed shower some day :)

If you have any suggestions Id love to hear them, so far I have decided im going to buy 3 of those t5 lightings, maybe even 4 after I do a real calculation of space after, fans, cables and lights are put in.
