I am making my first grow box(primarily to grow from seed to size and then plant outdoors)

SO far there are 2 12" CFLs mounted under the shelf shown in pic.

I am planning to put a fan on top left/out and bottom right/in...

For anyone who has done this before please leave me any feedback... problems or suggestions you see i could use to omprove the setup!

THANKS!

i tried it on my closet shelf once and everything died on me... I thougt it was because the heat was all collecting there.

Btw I got the cabinet for free. Check at apt complex dupsters, thrift shops, and on craigslist and maybe you'll find a sweet deal.

oh yeah , wow that is true, i never thought of looking in thoes places. ahaha thanks

and the fan would be a nice thing to have to vent. it a bit

First time post, This is what i did, but it would prolly be better to mount your exhaust fan higher and your fresh air intake lower, remember hot air rises.
I built a Plexi-glass box with thin wood frame and plexi-glass top its about 2x2x3 1/2 I have four two foot T-5's and a 42 watt cfl and one 3 1/2" muffin fan (that i picked up at frys for 15 bucks) blowing in the side of the box at about mid level. the T-5s are I guess 2000 lumens apiece and 24 watts, the cfl is like 2700 lumens, I covered two sides with black trash bags. I got one them battery powered humidity/ temperature guages and through it in there around mid-level the temperature and humidity fluctuates from 75-78 F and around 58- 65 H most of the time it stays at 75F and 65H. Just recently I was bitten by the bug so i went out and got a 150 watt HPS. I put the thing on the top of the box and turned it on it started to deform the 1/4" thick plexi-glass. No shit dummy. so i cut a hole in the top and it sits perfectly, very minimal light escapes. Them temperature now rises to 92 degrees constant and 45% humidity, i have one more muffin fan that i will mount on the top to exhaust the heat. every night a couple mins before the lights go out i spray them down with some seltzer water, these muffin fans move about 80 to 100 cfm i think. ill mount it tomorrow and let you know how it gos

here are some before the HPS and muffin fan pics

well that exhaust fan i added only dropped the temp 2 degrees and the humidity raised about 3%. maybe i can rig up a cool tube, that might help some.

You're gonna need a ton more light. You need at least another 40-50 watts of CFL to be efficient...

omg i almost broke my neck trying to look at he second pic...cool setup man. why does it have glass around it?

Well first off i wanted an indoor greenhouse, something that would be cosmetically pleasing to the eye so i could put it in the front room or where ever and i also wanted to be able to control the atmosphere within it. everything was working perfectly until i added the 150 watt hps. I have to do some major mods to the top to get that problem ironed out.
or maybe ill just take it out and add a couple more 100 watt cfls

ya i hear ya. I was growing with a 100w hps before this setup and it made a 400 sq ft room HOT(until i setup the exhaust system...you've got to have a fan pulling heat away)

Same situatsion here now. I just added two more cfl tubes... 4 total now. and when i came home the temp was 98 plus.... So I turned the exhaust on and now with both fans it keep temp 85ish.. with everything closed up. Trying to be discreet with mine.

A am almost ready to go outdoors with all the hassle of controls ...lol. but i wanna get htis working right so that i can veg plants and strengthen them to be ready for the outdoors.

Any further ideas appreciated. also on the ywllowing leaves! pftt..

Nee further feedback on my setup made some notes on ideas to lower temp etc Does anyone see a better spot/way to exhaust and make an intake? Does an intake require a fan? Thanks in advance
