New curing jars stink!

I have always cured my buds in plastic tupperware/rubbermaid type containers, lately even using glad "disposable" type containers. Never had a single problem.

This time around I decided to try what others have used which is glass mason jars. I went out and bought a couple cases of 1qt mason jars with lids. I open up a jar and they stink to high heaven. I have scrubbed the jars thoroughly with soap and water and also scrubbed the lids. Let them dry and then put the cap on them. Come back in a couple hours and open them up and they stink just as much as before. I can't imagine curing buds in a jar like this, I don't want my buds absorbing the stinky odor from the jar. I believe it's the rubber seal on the lid causing the odor.

Does anybody have any tips on how to remove the stink before I put good buds in these jars?

never had the stink problem before with clean new jars :) maybe they just smell new, but that's still odd. A good high powered steam might work, maybe toss some rice in overnight (rice is very absorbent)

that is odd, vinegar or lemon juice will usually neutralize the odor oh and add a little baking powder and make like a paste to scrub it a bit.

I don't have rubber seals on my mason jars, at least any rubber that would be inside the jar to effect smell. Another type of jar I use is plastic jars that you can get at wally world or target. They have a metal ring around the top side and it clamps down with a thumb lever. Those also work well!

I've been using mason jars since I began to understand and make use of "curing".....as my selection improved and different strains became more available, I've gone to a smaller jar, a starbucks 9.5oz frappucino thats a perfect size for curing the 4-7 grams I usually have per strain....even if a little frappe flavor sank in I wouldn't mind!

Thanks for all the tips. Think I'll try soaking a few lids in vinegar first. This is a pic of one of the lids. It has to be the rust colored rubbery ring that is putting out the odor. It certainly can't be the glass.

+rep to all who have replied.

if its that bad, take it back. say u think they smell too much and u want to see if others smell like that. usually jars have a little bit of a smell to them, but not too much.

Mine don't smell and never smelled. I got a couple cases of them at a family dollar store. But the vinegar idea is a good one.

I bought 2 different cases from 2 different stores. They all smell the same.

i had this issue when i bought a case. i think washing them did the job. once i had cannabis in them the smell could not be noticed and did not effect the smell of the cured product. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just wash them with dish soap and hot water and it should be fine. Maybe let them soak in hot water for a while first.

Same problem with that rubber on the lid. I soaked the lid in hot water and pinesol over night. No smell now. Hope it works for you too. Just wash it off good when your done.

I know what you're talking about. It's sort of an industrial smell. If you've got some jars that smell heavily and don't stop after a good rinse I don't know what to tell you.

Thanks pale, I'll try that next. Vinegar didn't work. Just taking the lid off and letting it sit out for several days though has made a noticable decrease in the smell the lid puts out when put on the jars

i would say they all smell the same just some people dont notice or get nice old used jars, i think some of that smell comes from the shit that helps the jar make a hermetic seal when you boil it with the presevres in it witch we dont do here at riu so i would think if you fill it 3/4 to 90% full with water tighten lid place upright in boiling water for 5-7 mins wate for lid to suck in and then cool then open it should be completely gone.

when i bought my jars they smelled a little chemical-y...like rubber maybe.

After storing weed in them for a few weeks, they smell like good weed. My weed has no rubber smell.
