And so it begins, my second grow. After the surprising results of my first grow, I knew I had to start a second grow and go for even better results. With this journal, I not only hope to get some help along the way, but to give some back to the RIU community. This is an open thread, so feel free to post any suggestions, questions or even something completely off-topic. Just one rule... only good vibes in this thread.

Background:
For my first grow, I had a 3'x2'x4' stealth box growing two Master Kush and one AK-48, all from Nirvana Shop, and yielded over 3.5 total oz. I was really pleased with results, the bud was all very potent and gives me a great high, but I am hoping to improve on the quality and the yield. Most of the bud was really fluffy and loose. After picking up a few tricks from fellow RIU'ers, I'm determined to find even more success with my second grow.

Box Setup:
- 3'10" wide, 17" deep, 5'10" tall
- 250W Agrosun Bulb (containing both halide and sodium)
- Four 23W CFL Bulbs (6500K bulbs for veg and 2700K for flowering)
- 6" airduct fan for exhaust (250 CFM)
- Passive air intake
- Two fans for circulation
- Homemade carbon filter

DWC Setup:
- (3) 17 qt. (approx 4 gallons) plastic storage containers, spray painted black
- 80 gallon airpump w/ a 12" airstone for each reservoir
- 3.75" netpots
- Hydroton and rockwool

Nutrients & Supplements:
- General Hydroponics Flora Nutes
- Hygrozyme: a natural cleanser that helps kill off bad bacteria in the water, giving the plants healthier roots
- Humboldt County's Gravity: used during last couple of weeks to help creater denser buds (thanks to jigfresh for this recommendation)

Seeds & Strains:
After hearing all the recent rave on here about Attitude, I had to browse their site and I was really impressed. The site gives helpful info about every strain, such as flowering period, effects, yield amount, and some detailed descriptions about the strain. Even more impressive? They carry seeds from all of the biggest names out there: Flying Dutchman, Sensi Seeds, Dutch Passion, etc. I purchased Super Lemon Haze and White Widow. Attitude sent emails providing updates on the status of your order, and my seeds were shipped 3 days after they received my payment (they do take credit card payments, but just remember, that leaves a paper trail). Coming from UK, it got here to the states in just under a week. I purchased "insurance" with my order for about $11 which allowed them to ship the seeds even more discreetly and more importantly, if you don't receive the seeds for one reason or another, they will re-ship.

I'm also growing Masterkush which is left over from my first grow, purchased from Nirvana Shop. I was really impressed with their Master Kush so I figured I'd grow her again. Plus she was a really high yielder, so gonna go for some quantity here.

All my seeds are feminised, don't really want to go through that whole waiting to see if it's a male or female deal.

Here are some info on the strains, pulled from Attitude's and Nirvana Shop's websites.

Super Lemon Haze - Green House Seeds - 2008 Cannabis Cup winner :bigjoint:
Height: Tall
Flowering: 9-10 weeks
"It’s a sharp and intense taste, which reminds of lemon, lime and pink grapefruit, followed by a very earthy and musky haze aftertaste, with traces of incense and black pepper. The effect is very balanced; it starts with a quick indica-hit feeling that softly moves to a very strong high, with a social and creative side."

White Widow - Green House Seeds
Height: Tall
Flowering: 9 weeks
"This Widow has a moderate THC content and yield, but absolute connoisseur quality. It offers a strong Indica kick and an ever-present Sativa head-high, combined with a clean, smooth smoking flavour."

Master Kush - Nirvana Shop
Height: Medium
Flowering: 9/11 weeks
"By popular demand, this Hindu Kush / Skunk hybrid was stabilized and marketed, and it has been a classic ever since. Master Kush has a pleasantly earthy, mossy smell and its smoke is smooth."

I'm still around a week away before the start of my grow. My grow cabinet/box is just about done and right now, just finishing up the reservoirs.

For details about the construction of my cabinet, take a look here... https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/246317-diy-budget-closet-grow-box.html

Here are some pics:

Quick update... I gotta get going and do some final touches on my fantasy football teams.

I don't know what's going on with my plastic container this time, but I could not spraypaint a solid coat on them... and yeah, I'm using spraypaint made for plastic. I've already used 3 cans on my reservoirs.... and I'm dong spending money on it. So time to take the ghetto way out. I'm going to use my reflective duct tape to patch up the light leaks.

I purchased a digital pH meter, the Hanna HI 98107 pH pen meter for $28. I've heard a lot of bad things about budget pH meters, but I plan on using it to compliment my liquid test kit.

I also purchased a ppm meter, the HM Digital COM-100, EC/TDS pen meter for $55.

I also stopped by my local Hydro shop yesterday again (get this, it's on Rt. 420) to pick up buffer and calibration solution... and decided to fork up the money for Humboldt County's Own Purple Maxx. It increases the amount of crystals on your bud... this was also recommended to me by jigfresh.

Jigs... I don't blame you on being scared of using this stuff. They even throw some major warning on the label.

So I'm done spending money on my second grow... already spent way more than I had planned, primarily on nutes and supplements.

I had originally planned on starting my seedlings next weekend, but I'm thinking about starting earlier as long as I can get all the finishing touches in place.

Did you sand the plastic real good with a medium grit sandpaper? I'm guessing not. Without that on tough plastic the paint will just clump towards itself as there is nothing on the plastic surface to adhere to. You need 'rough' for the paint molecules to get comfy in.

I think tape is the way to go anyways... more reflectivity and it makes everything looks like it's from space.

Matter of opinion, but I think spraypainting is the ghetto alternative to metal tape.

Plus the tape is much cheaper than the paint.

Im thinking I might try the PM on my soil grow. Maybe even foliar spray the big hydro girls with it. I don't think I'll try it in the rez. You can if you want though... we'd all love to see the results (unless they are bad).

One good thing about HCO products... they seem expensive but last forever. So really not that bad of an investment.

I can't wait till things get going.

Holy $h1t! I didnt even see that you have started your second grow. It looks amazing. The box looks flawless. Im glad your using separate more manageable containers. I wish i had a bigger container right now, i have no idea how you did 3 in your first one.

As for the spray paint, i agree with jig, you should just do a quick sand, and it will stick much better.

I cant believe your doing Super Lemon Haze! Thats going to be amazing, as you know im doing Herijuana X super silver haze. But you got the cannibis cup winner! dAmN. Im jealous.

Good luck with everything, im sure things will go even better this second time around.

Im really interested to see how big the SLH gets because i want to try that strain as well.

Yo guys, man these last few days haven't exactly been easy. My personal laptop broke on Saturday while my work laptop was being worked on. Meanwhile, being the stoner that I am, I tore apart my condo last night looking for my camera... only to realize this morning that I left it in my car over the weekend. :eyesmoke: So I'm in the market for a new personal laptop so bear with me for a few weeks, there may be days at a time that I may not provide an update.

A few quick updates...

- I gave my box a test run and everything is all set. The temp of the box is in the low-mid 80s depending on the indoor temp. By next month, I expect this to drop to the low-mid 70s w/ the fall weather.

- Need to buy some more tubing tomorrow to get my reservoirs finished. I ended up duct taping the boxes to patch up the light leaks.

:leaf: :leaf: :leaf: Breaking News. So if all goes to plan, I will begin germinating the seeds tomorrow. We're getting there.

c'mon jigs, you gotta give me some credit... yeah, i did sand the container down.... .... .... ...though to your credit, i will admit that i did a very half-assed job. :eyesmoke: i totally agree with you now about spray painting being the ghetto method. though with the reflective duct tape, you do need to provide another layer underneath since it does let light through.

so i asked the hydro shop guy about foliage feeding with PM and he says that i should also get this anti-mold spray if i plan on that method. i guess i'll be the guinea pig and take us on an adventure.

thanks for some good laughs jigs. you ready to do this???

welcome to the party stu. you haven't missed anything yet, you joined just at the right time. i'm totally stoked about the super lemon haze.

actually, you reminded me of something. i want to know what everyone wants with the super lemon haze. if you have seen any of the pictures of the SLH plant, it has a very christmas-y shape to it. it can also be a very tall plant, saying it stretches 2-3 times in height during the first three weeks. when you subtract the height of the reservoir and lighting, i have about 4' available for the plants.

so with that said, would everyone like to see me:
a) low-stress train
b) just let it grow naturally, flower earlier
c) top it
d) other (suggestions?)

when you say reflective duct tape... are you talking about metal tape? It's actually made of alluminium. I'm not doubting you, but my metal tape lets in NO light. I mean put it on clear plastic, put in front of the sun, and you see not even a glow.

I did give you credit in my head... then I thought about how some of us growers aren't very handy... wasn't really sue which kind you were.

My vote is for LST. I think free growing will lead to a lack of space. Maybe top AND lst???

And yes... I am ready for this.

For sure.

I saw this is someones sig tonight... not my idea... total rip off... but I loved it, so here you go.

 + bongsmilie + bongsmilie = :peace:

Srry not tryin to interupt your journal i would really like to be able to do that.
infedel, it's all good, i'm not one of those guys who'll bight your head off for going off topic. we're all here to help each other right?

here's a little step-by-step:
- Log in to RIU
- Go to the "My Rollitup" link below the RIU logo
- On the left side, there is a menu called your Control Panel
- You'll see the "Edit Signature" link under the "Settings and Options" section

it's that easy.

jigs, i can always count on you for a good laugh.

you know what? i don't know what my tape is... it says "FLEXFIX" on the tape and i got it from home depot with all the other duct tape. know what i'm talking about?

i like to consider myself a bit handy... though i definitely can get sloppy when i'm stoned... as exemplified by my piss-poor sand job on the plastic containers.

and so far, two of you have voted for topping and LST so maybe that's it right there.

i'm actually not familiar with UB's four main cola method, looks like i'll be doing a little googling tonight.

with two of you saying to go with topping and LST, i think i just might have to do that.
