2. what light cycle do i start the babies on and how close to this type of lamp??
3. do i water them or start nutrients yet???? if so how much?

the little thing you can see is the roots so plant that down

i always start straigt into 18/6 but you can do 24/0 for a few days

as for your light i cannot help you i run CFL's so my lights can be very close but ino its different for HPS

400 watt hps is pretty strong for seedlings be very carefull not to burn them i would use cfl until they are 6" to 8" tall then use your hps it will save on electricity, if you use your hps for seedlings keep them far away from light like 24" or more.

yes you want to water your girl but only when she needs it, don't add nutes yet wait 2-3 weeks and then when you do add nutes make sure it's 1/4 strength or you might burn your babies. Daniel is right about the light. stay high

1. Which way you plant it does not matter. The plant will grow to the light. If you plant it root down there is a slight chance it might break the surface a day quicker, but thats about it.

2. With a 400w hps, start them and keep them on 18/6 light cycle until you are ready to put them into flower. While they are seedlings you want the light between 24"-36" from the plants. Once they get 3-4 sets of nodes you can move the like to between 12"-18." The concern with how close the light is to your plants is not about light intensity, its about heat, since HID lights get hot. So you can judge how hot your grow room is, because everyone's ventilation and set up is different, and how hot the light is and adjust from there, remember you want to keep the temp below 78 degrees F.

3. No nutes until they are 2-3 weeks old. Then like shrx said, start with 1/4 dose. Then as they grow, up the dosage.

Good Luck

thanks so much guys really appreciate all the help !! one last little dilema, ive been told that the best mix for the plant is one part soil, one part perlite, one part compost, i bought some really really cheap basic compost and some multi purpose compost, which i notice has added nutrients, dont know whether these nutrients allready added will conflict with those i am going to add at a later date?? perhaps il use the multi purpose with nutrients in it allready when they are in the smaller pots, then use the plain stuff in the mix for bigger pots when i start adding nutrients manually?? answers very much appreciated so i can plant tonight !!!!

Not sure about the 1:1 ratio. It depends on how much moisture (haha i said moist) your soil holds. I use a soil mix that I got at my local hydro shop and add 1 cup of perelite to 6 cups of soil mix. You want decent drainage. As far as prenuted soil, don't add nutes for a while cause you'll burn her for sure. It may burn her at first anyway depending on how strong the prenutes are. The only thing I can suggest with prenuted soil is let your girl tell you when to start adding your own nutes. Stay high

Simple answer: Avoid using soil with nutes already in it. It can be done but it is much harder to control problems then. Also, soil with nutes already in it is usually alright for veg, but by flower time the roots are already entangled in that soil and you need to change the ratios then. I like a 50% peet moss 25% perlite 25% verm mix. Alot of soil choice is preference and experience too though. Marijuana is a weed so it will grow in most anything.
