Need some ventilation help/suggestions.

What’s up everyone? I have some ventilation questions that I need some advice on. I’m not new to growing, just new to a tent setup. Previously, all my grows have been setup in a spare room. With that said, let’s get to the details..

I have a 400w open hood hps that I’ll be using for flower. I’d like more wattage but I don’t believe that’ll be an option as of right now for budget reasons.

I’m likely going to be purchasing a 5x5 tent (I was considering Vivosun but they’re currently out of stock on amazon and I wanted to use amazon for faster shipping, so any suggestions on tents is welcomed also). I could fit my ladies in a 4x4 but I believe the extra space will be helpful for fans and whatnot. I was planning to get a 6” Vivosun fan with a 16-18” Vivosun carbon filter for my exhaust.

I’m just wondering if I need something bigger for my exhaust (or possibly a different brand if needed). Also, do I need at least one intake fan or will passive intake be enough? I’m most concerned about smell and keeping my temps cool inside the tent. And I want to maintain negative pressure inside the tent. For the record I can run an ac inside the room that the tent will be in to keep the air going into tent cool... I just need some advice on what fans I need to do this properly.

I’ll be actively watching the thread and replying as I can. If you have any questions about my setup don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance!

I have same exhaust fan with speed control built into cord plugged into temp cooling thermostat with passive air in. I blow hot air out the top and open bottom vents , I don't even need circulation fans inside because the passive intake is perfect the plants dance but not too much flow.
Thank you for your detailed reply and the pics! This is exactly what I wanted, a response from someone either using the same equipment or sometime similar, with real experience. Your girls look happy!

I would like to ask, what brand tent are you using? I ask this because I’ve noticed that different brands have different amounts/sizes of passive intake windows and since you say your passive intake is enough, that would help me make my decision on what tent I will purchase.

I like the idea of the temp cooling thermostat, but I’m not sure I’ll actually need that. I may be wrong, but I feel like I’ll need my fan on at all times (after finding my sweet spot) to keep temps down. Don’t hesitate to correct me if I’m wrong. I look forward to your response.

I wrote it down and took a pic. Let me know if you can read my hand writing and if link takes you to the page. I only use it for veg. I have it in separate room door closed no heat in the room itself I'm in Massachusetts it gets cold so I crack the window and the fan cycles on and off .Very cheap way to save on electricity too.
Haha.. you went through a lot to get me the link and your efforts are greatly appreciated. And yes, I found the tent. I see this particular tent has 3 windows for passive intake, which answers my question. Thanks again man!

This is the 5x5 i ordered from amazon. It was the best priced 5x5 I could find online.

That filter combo should be just about perfect for that tent size, mine is the same kit just the 8" fan because I already had it.

Thanks for your input and the pic as well. I see that your tent also has 3 passive intake windows. This makes me believe I definitely want/need one with 3 instead of 2. I had planned to hang my carbon and filter inside the tent... how do you like it on the outside / on the floor?

I had all 3 open while i was setting it up, ill close the one on the right side once its all set up. I would just make sure you can have 2 open without letting a ton of light in. my open two are in a back corner of the basement against the walls in an area that already doesnt get much light.
I just went for the cheapest 5x5 with a metal frame and corners i could find.
I put the filter outside for space reasons. This is a veg tent so i wanted all the verticle space I could get so i can put them up on a table so save my back. Works just as well. Have the filter setup like this in my 10x10 as well.

This makes sense, and gives me an idea of how well the passive intake will work. Big thanks!
