i have to move from the very casual place i've been living, to a place where stealth is much more important. i want to get rid of my h.i.d. lighting and go to strips.
i need to light a 4X8 foot area for flowering.
i don't want to know what the best strips are...i don't want to know what the newest strips are...i want to know what a good quality compromise is between price and efficiency...
will these strips do?

if so, how many will i need to light my 4x8 tent, and how many, of what driver to run them? i don't want to run them wide open, so maybe throw in one more than needed so i can run them softer?
I use a 4ft light strip that takes regular light bulbs 1600 Lumens each and 6500k light spectrum each for veg. I can get ten bulbs in each fixture, and Im using two of them. Do the math on light strip your talking about vs what I’m using and there is a significant difference!

It will contribute to heat removal on a minimal level. Increasing the exposed surface area, increases the ability to "sink" heat. Angle, or U chanel will work better as an actual heatsink, or wider flatbar I suppose.
Yea i was thinking of using 1-1/2" wide flat bar attached to a frame.

I suggest two lights, each with 12 strips and an HLG-480H-42AB driver. Prices are reduced on the Gen-2 strips since the Gen-3 started becoming available, so they are great value, especially since no heat sinks or fans are needed.

Most people suggest 30-35 watts/square ft. with efficient LED like the strips you linked. As @Chip Green says, they can be run at 1000ma with no heat sink whatsoever, so 1A x 40v = 40w per strip, or 24 strips to make two 4x4 lights. On a couple occasions, I've simply hung them vertically by the power wires or from the top of a cardboard grow box with string or wire. They can run within a few inches of the canopy due to the excellent distribution of light and heat.

would they still be effective if i ran them at 60-65 watts, and would they still need heatsinks if run at that wattage? would a pc fan for each one work instead of heatsinks? happen to have a couple of dozen decent pc fans....
For the Citizen 1212's or other cobs a heat sink is needed. With LED efficiency declines as power is increased.

But a cheap CPU cooler works well. Don't want to drill? Glue them on. I have 8 veros I've run glued for many years. $12 per cooler. You do need a 12volt supply for the fans. I ran QBs a few cycles. I found it easier to remove the heat with my coolhood design cob. The fins are closed except the ends. Maybe a 2 inch clearance. Then the exhaust fan pulls the air through the 10" wide x42" long beasts. I imagine the QBs mounted on a coolhood design would work better as well. ymmv

You can run gen7 vero 29 pretty hard (100w) with 120mm+ pin sinks and still maintain above de hps efficacy, decent coverage on a bare cob too..... Just a bang for the buck, not "best" option for everyone.

Strips are going to add better coverage, higher efficiency, lower depreciation @ a higher cost and complexity generally speaking. If I was building in 2020 I would be leaning this way.....

You COULD use an HLG-600H-36A/B running them in parallel. But you really should try to avoid having your entire lifeline of light for your run on one single driver in case it fails. Which happens, trust me. I've had to RMA 4 of mine.
So if it were me, I'd use 3x HLG-240H-36A/XLG-240-L-A MeanWells or go the cheaper route and use 3 LRS-200-36 MeanWells. The extra 120 watts of the HLGs or XLGs would be nice but cost a bit more and the LRS models would need to be separate from your build and just use longer length DC wires to have it outside the tent.

16 is a great number for a 4x4 or a 5x5.
How would you divide the 16 COBs among 3 drivers?
Try using 2 x320 drivers, or 2 lrs350 if yyour on the cheap ;)

If you wanna finnese it: 200w driver for your corners, upto 50w per cob, and 2x 150w (or a 320 or similar) for the 8 remaining cobs on the sides and then another 150w or so for the centre 4. This way you can fully dial in your even light intensity.
