4x4 room can take a 1000watt light if you have ventilation. Sorry some of these people jumped down your throat, lots of people are just dicks. 1/2 O isn't too bad under a 400. I personally think 1000 would give you some issues without some good ventilation, i would step up to the 600. They are the most efficient as far as lumens/watt plus it wont be as hard to keep temps in check.

i'd rather tell him to come back with the info than start blindly telling him to upgrade his lights. Maybe he's getting 1/2oz becauyse he's got 30 plants under the 400w? Hence the requests for information..... haha depending on plant numbers 1/2 ooz is utterly shit for a 400w, hence the OP's desire to grow more, seems he knows there's more to be had from the light.

you need to understand effective light bands, depending upon the wattage there is only a limited band or layer of effective light a 400 watt bulb has an effective range between 6 and 21 inches any neerer and you will burn the plants and beyond 21 inches growth will be restricted. so the effective band or layer of light for a 400HPS is only 15 inches. you can grow a four foot plant under a 400 watt bulb and only the top will produce a decent yield. the botton 3 foot or so will be scrawny little bits of bud. it is a waste of time therefore growing a plant higher than about 18 inches, but you can still pull 3 oz off the 18 inch high plant. if you lst and suppercrop to produce as meny cola sites as your area will take, you can do a sog grow with say 4 plants under a 400 watt and crop 350 - 400 grams when you get good, and an average grower should still pull 200 grams off a 400 watt lamp.
No point in bang on about more lights to him ...... for all we know he maybe growing using badly learned techniques..... or simply an old light.
If he IS growing badly .......
or the strain he's growing is simply poor.....
or there maybe many factors producing such a low yield.
Increasing his light ain't going to help him ONE BIT except waste his time and money.

Blue hash dynamite bubble gum kush 10 plants in 4x4x6 tent with a 400 watt sunburst fix. Gd ventilation. Temp 75 to 82 degrees. Humidity about 40. House and garden product plus sugar daddy. My 3ft warlock got like a qtr. Popcorn buds ouch. Bubble gum kush was the same but that was a small plant. All from seed. Start veg at 5 to 7 nodes.

I bet ya harvest to early, had a mate that dose this. Always mowned about poor yields and when i checked it out they were harvested 3 weeks early
