If you veg a plant you are making it get bigger. So 12/12 now.
And don't spend too much on a couple cfl's without first thinking about the $20 150w hps. But if you got that I guess you'd need a cabinet to put it in too, so nevermind.

Only the plants you want to flower should be 12/12.

For your weed grow it needs to be in a completely dark box to sleep 12 hours so it will flower. Any light during those 12 hours of sleep and it will never flower and just keep growing like a houseplant. That includes if you are peeking in the box when it's asleep.
I would suggest you at least buy one of the $20 150w hps's and some used kitchen cabinet and start going to work setting up a decent liitle grow.
You could use one of those hps's just for your houseplant tent, with a reasonably decent looking hood so it looks all nice. 4" furnace ducting or even 6" makes a good looking and simple as hell reflector for that. You'd be looking at a $54 investment in two of those lights shipped and probably $5 for a cabinet at goodwill or a garage sale or whatever. One light and a cabinet for $35 or so and a couple fans one for exhaust on top, a passive intake in the bottom, and a fan just to blow air on the top of the plants and on the bulb.
That one guy is right, stop fucking around and get serious if you actually want to get some bud. (not to be a dick, just trying to make that clear)

One of my main problems is space, so is there a compact way to do this? I dont mind buying equipment, but my whole objective is to eventually grow these to flower at less than 12 inches. Can I buy a box that is only 1 ft or 1 1/2 ft tall?

Also, I specifically bought the 6500k light because of a recommendation on this post... so is this not the best choice? I have a 3000k one still up at the top, but do I need more of that spectrum for the flower cycle that I just started or will just one of the hps lights listed suffice?
I use an empty computer case (cfl lighting), holds 6 small plants (hydro setup).

I don't know of anyone that doesn't have the space for a cabinet the size of what your dishes are probably in... Standard upper kitchen cabinet can grow enough bud to support most smokers if used properly, preferrably on a perpetual yield basis giving a plant per week with vegging and cloning done in your clear tent with the houseplants.
You should start watching some of the video's posted by this guy for full information on how to grow etc:

Try a low height strain like 'Lowrider'...

You will prob need a brighter light though. If ur short of space & ventilation I'd stick with a 125w CFL blue/white. and keep it within 10cm of the plants... expect 60+ days flowering though.
May as well save ur cash/invest and buy a secret Jardin DR40 or 60. I built a small grow room before and it was more cash and hastle than it was worth. With that size you wont need any extractor fans or filters etc. Just put it in the corner of the room with a 125cfl a timmer and a recirculating fan.

Great posts guys, its been a lot of help. 60 plus days of flowering? that sounds pretty intense.. I cant use my kitchen cabinet because I have a roommate... can we consider this a secret grow? I have a small shelf that I started working on yesterday, Ill post pics when I finish it
