My third grow, Afghan weed

Ok, so it's been awhile.. But here I am again guys.
I have finally got tired of vegging the suckers (there past the 3 month mark now), and I just recently put them into flowering mode a few days ago. I have changed all the CFL's from daylight to warm white/cool white. I still have yet to receive my HPS light but the friggers who are supposed to ship it are so darn slow..
I have been changing the light schedule back an hour every two days, until I hit the 12/12 mark.. there currently at 16/8 right now. I have changed the nutrient solution to my bloom formula 5-30-5.
I havn't sen much budding so far, but I guess it's just a matter of time.
The suckers have gotten taller though, with a little more stretching. The little one shot right up after I reppoted it. it's now the third tallest of the group, I was amazed at how fast she grew after replanting with Mg soil.

This is her now at about 2 months:

She is at 20 inches now(over 1.5 feet). She is the skinniest of the bunch, but flowering will fatten her right up :).

This is the biggest mama, who is now at a whopping 27 inches! (2.25 feet):

Here is the second largest of the bunch, he is topped out at 26 inches:

I water the suckers every day(about 2 litres or so of water for the bunch).
they can go a max of 2 days without water until they droop and start to wither. Every morning before work, I spray them with water(very weak bloom formula). Plus I water them in the morning or when I get home from work. Sometimes a combination of both.

I have mad a discovery about growing marijuana.. the size of the plant you will have, depends on the size of the container you have. My plant with the largest container seems to be the largest, and the plant with the smallest pot, seems to be the smallest. When you replant marijuana into a bigger pot, it shoots right up to a certain point, then growth slows considerably. This is the time to repot again if wanted/required. If I had a huge totes filled mith MG soil, my plants would be monster sizes! I guess it also depends on the strain.

So this is week one of the 8 weeks it will take to flower my afghanis, I will check in every week to show you guys the progress of the plants, and any new discoveries with/about the plants.

I have never tried a pure Indica before(well not that I know of, I used to get my stuff from random dealers). I am interested to feel the effects as opposed to a mighty rushing heady high of a sativa.

Thanks guys for the compliments. These monsters are so big, I can hardly see the stem. I will post some more pics tomorrow, the second week into the flowering stage(actually first week of being 12/12).

I have finally received my hps light. After months of waiting, it's finally here.
I got a switchable balast(used for metal halide and hps lightbulbs), and a 430 watt son agro hps bulb. This bulb provides more watts then a standard 400 watt bulb, and also has the added blue spectrum light output. I also received an econo wing reflector(not the best but sure reflects well!).
Heres some pics:

On to my plants..
I am fairly dissapointed, I have found three males in with the 5 females(which leaves 2 females). I have noticed this a few days ago when I seen pollen sacs growing like crazy on them. The two females are beginning to get white hairs.

Here is the most profound male:

Its a shame, because it's the 3 largets plants that are male.. Their heights come in at: 3 feet(36 inches), 34 inches(the pic above), and the other male is alot shorter. I will cut them down very soon, after they mature abit, and make some hash or oil with them( I might collect pollen also and store it in the freezer as they are healthy thriving males).

As with the females, not showing much flowers yet, but I see where the flowers are beginning to come in. I am impressed with one of the females, who has reached a height of 32 inches!
This would be her:

The second female:

Camers takes mediocre pictures(hence above)

I guarantee you, with the HPS and the fluorescents I have in there, these mothers will be getting fat buds faster then you can say 4:20. I am interested to see what a week of being under an HPS light will do. I am fairly impressed with these HPS lamps(first time user). They throw off so much light, yet they also throw out ALOT of heat. I will need to make sure the temp stays stable at just under 30 celcius(or closer to 25 celcius for best results). These lamps are bigger then I expected also. I received my package which was about 1M x 0.5M x 0.5M. Weighed about 50 pounds or so too. I'm glad I have gotten it, because my grow space is much cleaner now, and I don't need all those 15 CFL's running in there.

Well I guess that's a wrap for today, i'll post next week and let you guys know how much the buds are starting to come out. Thanks for taking the time to read my grow journal(although it may not be much).
Keep tokin, and peace to all of you's:blsmoke:.

Cool Brendon..
The light, balast, and lightbulb were 210$, and shipping cost me 61$. So close to 300 dollars altogether. I almost cancelled and got my money back because the bastards were taking so long.. I waited out just long enough I guess. And it was sent via Fedex.
I ordered my light from BG Hydro, I was not satisfied with the service though.
The customer service was shit when I called to talk to them about my order, and they couldn't send it right away because they didn't have all the parts yet..

Hello guys, the third week of the flowering cycle has just begun. Day 16 to be exact. Quite a bit has happened since the last post..

Well i'll begin with what I have done with the males.. I took the males out of the closet, and put them into the far corner of the room, under regular fluorescent tubes. I waited until the male flowers started to open up and spread pollen, and I kept it in little baggies. I have chopped one of the males down, I thnk his usefullness as a pollen producer is now over. Such a thick stem, i had a hard time to get through it, even with my super sharp pruners. i needed a jagged tooth knife to cut through this baby:

The other two males I will chop tomorrow, there is still a few unopened flowers. These will makes some nice hash.

Now onto the females.
The females have reached just above 3 feet, and 2.5 feet. I see some flowerage starting to come in, and some trichomes starting to form.
There are turning into beauty queens =P.

Female #1:

Female #2

I see the Hps light is helping considerably. I also threw in a few cfl's for side lighting. I must have aprox 578 watts shining in my growroom.
I water daily, with 5-30-5. One unfortunate thing has happened with my light though.. I was blind not to see there was a clear plastic covering the reflector, and as the light gets super hot, the plastic came off and melted all over my lightbulb... It stinks of burning plastic in my room now, and there is a residue on the bulb. Shitty .

Well, I have gotten the temps down in the range of 29-32 celcius. Alot better then what it was at the beginning: 34+. I needed to put my fan at one side of the room, blowing warm air out, and my cool mist humidifier is blowing cool air in. I keep my window open for fresh air aswell. I never knew how loud a single light fixture could be, it's almost as loud as when my fan is on medium.

I guess that's it for this report, i'll bring some more good news in next week, and let you know what's going on.
Take care guys:blsmoke:

Well I wouldn't condoning the cheap ballast anyways. Its much better to get something that has a thicker metal and the ability to air cool. Looking good with the MG.

I'm back with more progress on day 23. Not too much has changed, except I trimmed two of the males Yesterday. This is all the trimmings and stems ( I still have one male left to trim).

Now onto the females.. this is the tallest female:

And this is the other Female:

This Branch grew two tops on it's own:

My camera really dosn't take clear pictures.. So I regret that I can't really show you the trichomes on the buds.. :-|. Oh well, I'll deff show some of the final product, I might get good pictures then! I'm really starting to get impressed of the bud growth forming, Everything seems to be going well, except for today, the really tall one got a little to close to the light and got singed.. So I had to raise the light by about 3-4 inches. I am actually thinking I might have one sativa and one indica.. I am about 90% sure I planted both Afghan seeds, but I might have mixed it up. The tall one is twice as tall as the shorter one, less bushy, and the buds are forming differently (less fat and more sparse with more green in there) The short indica has more white hairs. They are being grown the exact same way. I would be glad to have both types of bud! I had both durban poison and Afghani seeds(pure indica and pure sativa :) ). If I did happen to mix it up..? Only time will tell I guess.. Oh, next time i'll have a pic of them side by side, and you'll be able to see the diff!
Well until next week guys! Hope you guys had an eyeful from these mommas.
Take care

Oh A few more things I noticed while growing, that male stems are fatter then female stems, and males grow alot more leaves and are thicker, while females are shorter and skinnier. Male buds show first, and start to mature around the time the female buds start to show. When the female buds are solid enough, that's when the males release pollen. Females take longer for the buds to grow, and smoking male flowers only gives you a headache.. lol

Im back after a little over a week of not posting. It's now day 33, and the buds are starting to get thicker and fill out more. I started feeding them both a litre of water daily even if they don't look thirsty. I think it's helping them somewhat. The buds are starting to thicken up.

here is some pictures of the talllest mother:

Here is mother numero two:

Overall I think there really starting to get to the finished product. I see the calyxes starting to swell and fill with the powerfull resin that gives us our real "stoned" feeling. I trimmed the lower part of the plant, to shift more of the energy upwards towards the top buds. Oh btw, I wish my camera was alot more clear then it was, it's taking away from the beauty of the shimmering trichomes on the thickening buds..

Well until next week, when they will be nearing the finished product.. the 6 week mark!

Peace out and keep toking:blsmoke:

This is unconsequently week 7(day 50) of the flowering stage. Things are starting to near the end, trichomes filling out, brown hairs showing allover, and buds getting thicker, as well as more resinous. I beleive this will be the last week of growing until the famous "chop". I do have some pictures, to feed all your curious eyes. They do have quite a pungy smell, almost fruity I might say. fruity, sweet, and tangy all in one. I think this will be some quite potent buds. Anyway, enough chitchat, here, I will get onto the pictures.

Madame tall, top bud(more white hairs then the other):

AND

She seems to have like 4-5 tops on this man cola.. ^

Here is 2 pictures of the complete plant( I couldnt fit it all in one pic)

Main top cola:

Bottom buds:

This is shorter, more brown haired mother:

(close up of top bud to show brown hairs)

Main top bud:

Bottom buds:

Notice the red string? I needed to hold up one of the lower buds because the branch almost broke off from the weight of it. I also have a thin rod holding up the whole plant, because without it, it seems to tip over and almost snap in two..

so I am making the preparations for the harvest, to increase potency, resin production, and as well as increase trichomes. I am buying a uv light tomorrow(40W blacklight tube). This will increase production of the trichomes, due to the fact that it is protecting itself against the harmful UV rays the tube emits. I will use only plain declorinated water to let it use up the rest of the ferts, and so you won't be smoking the fertilizer with the dried crop. I will keep it dry and hot to let the resin flow to protect itself against the heat. I will increase nightime by one hour, and during the last day or two, I will leave it in complete darkness. This stresses the plant into thinking it's gonna die, so it increases thricomes, resin, to try to protect itself in it's stressful state.

So that's pretty much the plan guys(and girls). I will keep you posted on the last week, and the drying/curing stage of the process. The drying curing will take aprox 2-4 weeks. I want this done right to have the smoothest, best tasting bud possible.

Curing changes thc to cbc which have psychoactive properties when left in a cool, dark environment as long as possible. the longer the better. If your not in any rush, it can be beneficial to bury your crop(after putting it in a glass jar, which keeps it cool and dark) for an entire month. Beleive me, you will love the increased potency this brings. If your in a hurry, water curing would be the best choice(if you do choose to cure). Leave the buds in water for a week, then dry in the oven, or leave to air dry to desired dryness. Make sure you leave it in a closed jar for a whole day(after water-curing) and see if condesation forms to see if there is still moisture inside the bud. If there is still moisture, it's won't burn properly when smoked, leave it dry a few more days dude, be patient!

MY grow journal pictures near the start are getting overwritten with some of the new pictures i'm posting. A good example is I think the second or third post, where it shows my flowering plants, which they were only in the veg stage then. This is just the pictures getting named by my camera: e.g.. pic 138, and it names a newer picture with the same name which overwrites from the old one. I can't really change this, so I guess it will just add some confusion to some people that don't read, and only view pics.

I am not happy at all.. this morning I thought I saw a seed in my weed, so I picked it out, and yes it was a seed. upon closer inspection, I noticed some seeds breaking through their little "cocoons". I knew I shouldn't of had my males in the same room as the females, I was afraid the pollen would actually carry from the corner of the room, into the closet. I made sure that i took a shower after collecting pollen from my males, and changed my clothes, but the fact that it carries through the air has taught me that the males need to be bestroyed b4 they produce pollen, or put them into another room entirely. There goes the potency of the buds I was hoping to have.. Now I know why they didn't grow as large and thick as I wanted the buds to be.. it put it's energy into developing seeds rather then the buds themselves.

I don't see really any seeds in the other marijuana plant, the one I think might actually be a sativa b/c I might have mixed up the seeds. She is filling out nicely, and still growing taller and thicker yet. The hairs are astill 90% white, so that also leads me to believe it could be a sativa. I will put my Afghani plant in the dark for two days after the lights turn off today(the one with 85%-90% brown hairs), and I will chop her down on friday. Then leave her to dry upside down until the stems "snap". The other plant still has some maturing to do yet. I will leave her to grow under the lights still.
