I went ahead and started a clone box and this is what we have so far after 2 days of work and $20 (which was actually for the white-rimmed clone).

There is a tiny elevated clone not pictured, but its right in front of the vent and I think it will do well there.

Let me know how you think we did. :eyesmoke::leaf:

Because I like to over think things and make them really complicated even though I have two tubs with drains in the bottom of them.... they are 27 gl totes though, and I totally dindn't think of it. I was testing aero/dwc with them. I know where i can get black totes though, all different sizes. A place called the container store has some that are black, black. Put one up and and look toward the sun and not even see a glimmer. they have a website also I think it's thecontainerstore.com. hmm, how deep are the tubs you're using?

My reservoirs are about 18 " deep. Since they are open on the top, it really doesn't matter what color they are.

I posted this in another thread I follow, but the pix and words might be valuable in my own thread too. so here ya go:

Well, an opportunity arose for me to contribute to/throw gasoline on this thread. Some folks have implied that the condition of rootboundedness doesn't exist, or at least not in hydro, or it can be overcome by modifying your cultivation practices, blah blah. Well.

I have several mother plants which have been alive in flood and drain since last July. I was breaking the branches down on this one, hoping to get it short enough to flower, but this thread and other factors helped change my mind. I'm glad they did. Let's take a look!

When they were 6 weeks old they were placed into 2 gallon pots filled with hydroton and they have remained there ever since. They grew 4 feet tall and stopped. Over time, fewer new shoots appeared, even in response to pruning. Leaves in general became a little droopy and slight signs of deficiencies appeared as well, mostly on lower leaves. Successive cuttings of clones have taken longer to root but there are a number of unrelated seasonal factors that could be at work there.

I think these roots look really crappy. There is barely any new white growth, just old tan, useless rotting mass.


















Enopugh of the horror show. This root mass is so dense, that even after soaking the root ball for hours. the mass is very difficult to break up. The water retention is enormous, leading to root suffocation and death. I flood twice a day and it is too much for this plant.

TO be fair, no one should keep a plant alive in hydro that long. Hydro is good for cropping not long-term maintenance. I'm sure someone can argue that statement with me, but it is a little like the pot-bound argument; anyone will argue anything on RIU.

Conclusion: In the specific hydroponic practise I follow, rootboundedness does indeed exert a negative effect on plant health in the long term. Generalizers my generalize; I am presenting my facts. My currernt plan of action is to kill the rest of my mothers; paging Dr. Freud!

why dont you put it in a 8 gallon tote with soil. is it that compressed? she does look solid. or matbee start a new mom

I HAVE new mothers. The old ones are too tall and root balls like that can become a reservoir of pathogens.

very nice grow man i have been checking it out for a little while now some very nice buds,
in response to the mothers and root bound problems, although in a net pot you may not get root bound, the pots you and i use (mine being 1 gal) definitely will get root bound. i was growing my mothers in 1 gal flood pots and after a while the pot was swelling (literally) so i started running my moms in hempy buckets (5 gal) and havent had a problem but they do get VERY tall. i have had this mom for a while now and she is doing well still giving healthy cuttings. are you just going to run your moms in the same pots just change them out more often??

Yes. I just potted a new mother in the same pot that old one came out of.

Soil, hempy, been there, done that. Looks like you have hempy figured out pretty well. How old is that plant? Seed? Clone?

Young mothers are where it's at.

Net pots in flood and drain is like an all you can eat buffet for fungus gnats in my nasty basement.

How is it that the bottom of that plant isn't dying off due to lack of light?

she is about 3 or 4 months old from clone, i might be replacing her soon but she is still giving me very healthy clones every month. here is a pic of the last batch i took 20 and chose the best 16 of the bunch had them rooted in 7 days transplanted to rw in 9. the hempys work good i just water with plain ph'd tap water for 2 waterings then full nutes the next watering, reason being if you water with nutes everytime (which i have done before) the accumulated water in the bottom 2 inches of the bucket will get stronger and stronger eventually burning up the plant this is just what i have found works for keeping a mom around for a while.

some of the lower shoots do die off. i take all my clones from the lowest portion of the plant available i will only take the best looking ones and cut the others away i keep her pretty well manicured.

where is the door located?? if its on one of the 7'8" walls you should be good as you will have a good 3'8" walkway to work and what not. also are you planning on running a single 1000w or something like that?? if it where me i would go with 2 600's one over each pair on other side of the room for a little better coverage IMO.
