My NFT hydroponics grow -need help!

Hi,

I have just decided to start my first grow, so I saved up for a hydroponics set up (gt205), 400watt hps lamp and 5 big bang seeds from the greenhouse seeds company.

I then set all this up in my wardrobe and began germinating the seeds. Which is where i started to get a bit confused.

I currently have then between some kitchen roll in a bowl with a bag wrapped round it with my hps light about 2 foot above this bag. Is this the best way to germinate?

I also have rockwool cubes, the guy gave me one all the same size with little circular holes at the top about 1inch accross and half an inch down. How do I transfer the seeds into these?

After research on the internet I found it says to "transfer the rockwools cube into your nft once the roots are showing". But what do you do from the point of putting the seeds with the little roots sticking out into the rockwool, till you have all the roots are coming out the rockwool cubes?

And finally, you will be happy to know, how often do you allow the motor to pump water to the top?

I hope this all makes sense, I have tried to look around for the answers to these questions, but not really found anything of any use,

Sorry if these questions have already been asked, I did have a brief look, but just needed to ask these specific questions.

Cheers

Germinate in a cool dark aria until you see the tap root coming out (I wait until it is at least 1/4" the way out and I germ with the seed completely submerged in water, I have high success rate and sometimes I let the taproot get up to an inch before I transfer to a no medium aero setup.

Roots should show out of the bottom of the rockwool cube, If yours are only 1/2" deep then you wont have too maney roots but that doesnt matter, I think rockwool and other mediums are overrated for hydro systems (my opinion)

How often you water depends on how your watering. Dont let the rockwool get too soaking wet right away but dont let it stay dry for more than a few hours.

thanks just checked now and i can see the little roots sticking out today, but i will leave it another 24 hrs. why do you think rockwool is over rated? i just find that they only get wet at the bottom of the cube as the pump only trickles water quite slowly? I am used to soil growing and these cubes have me well confused!

I think rockwool is over rated because I don't have access to it and I get along fine without it. Maybe it's better, I've seen pot grown in it and I know it works fine.
I know some people just stuck there watering tube up to the corner, how far up the cube I don't know. If yours are only 1/2" high then I would just try for one of the corners around the middle and see how that wets it.
Im not very experienced with rockwool so don't take my word for it, test some things out. I know its bad to be too wet with that stuff though.
