Hello everyone,
I'm just harvesting my first 400w grow and got about 4 and a half ounces dry out of 3 nice skunk#1/nl plants. I'm not quite ready to post pics of my grow yet but I learned a lot through trial and error and got a lot of help from the internet, especially RIU, so I just wanted to share some of my experience with anyone starting a personal indoor grow...
1- Grow out of love for the plant, not just for weed or to get money.
I spent a lot of time reading up about plants and really got into growing stuff for the fun of it, not just ganja, but also tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, herbs etc. and it's been really useful. Knowing about horticulture, soil, nutrients etc in general will really pay off in the long run, as you will appreciate the plants much more and be able to understand any problems you encounter and nip them in the bud, so to speak. If you want quick weed, you're much better off saving your money and just buying an ounce from someone...
2- Don't think that you can cut corners where others can't
You've read about how important it is to have good ventilation and temperature control, but you figure you can get away with getting a 20$ fan at walmart, point it at your 400w hps and be fine... and you end up with a sauna and some very upset plants. There are plenty of places to save money like building your own carbon filter or getting stuff off craigslist , but sometimes being cheap will cost you more in the long run. I guess what this comes down to is read up about growing and take the advice of people with experience at this seriously. I had many problems during my grow (temperatures, ph, nutrients, slight budrot) that could have easily been prevented this way...
3- Cloning and perpetual harvest is super easy, fun and totally awesome!
I was a bit worried that I would kill my plants when I took cutting from them before flowering, but it worked out really well and was very easy. I took 6 clones each from 6 plants, ended up with 3 nice females and am now vegging the best clones in a separate space. It's awesome to see flowering and vegetative growth happen in parallel and you will be amazed at how easily your cuttings will root with just a little bit of rooting hormone and a humidity dome. With your cuttings, you get a second chance at growing the plant that was amazingly vigorous or potent, but had ph problems, didn't get enough nutes or was stunted for some other reason.
I'll leave it there, but a huge thank you to everyone who grows and post on this forum!
