my hydro solution smells like an aquarium

This is day 21 since sprouting. This is also the first day I started using 400 watt high pressure sodium (I was using floro). My solution smells like an aquarium, the leaves are droopy, and the new growth (top and bottom) is stunted. The ppm has never been over 500, and I have to deal with low humidity because this HPS light is quite warm, hence AC big time. This picture is wierd because of the HPS for some reason. The next one is 5 days old. Hey, when do I start the flowering process btw.

Got some pix of inside the reservoir (i.e. the roots, water color, et cetera). Might be root rot.

By the way that is the same DWC unit I am using I think.
They dont look too bad.
1 cover the netcups with tin foil or something.
2 make sure you have no light leaks in.
3 You might have some slight nute burn and PH problems.
If your using good nutes and figure out your system its pretty easy to maintain.
I have my unit connected to a separate resivior. So I do my nute changes in the res. And adjust the ph as needed.
I use the liquid PH testers instead of the digital ones. I find them more reliable unless you want to spend 300 plus for a decent digital PH meter.
If you keep a fan blowing over the top of your plants you can keep the light very close without burning.
Overall your plants dont look too bad. You just need to watch the nutes and the ph. If you get those down the plants will take care of themselves.
If your not sure on the nutes drop down to half dose for a while.
I use Vita Grow granule hydroponic nutes. Fairly inexspensive and they grow stuff like crazy. And they dont bounce the PH around like some formulas.
