My First Grow.....sort of.

So about 14 years ago I bought a couple of HPS lights from a local farmer's barn he was tearing down. I grew one cycle in a closet with crappy bag seeds, a crappy yield but decent smoke. I would have done another cycle but we welcomed a little bundle of joy shortly after that and I felt that growing in my infant's closet was not the way to go. :???:

Here we are in 2017 and Massachusetts voters have made it legal so here we go.

I am growing in a 3' x 3' tent with two x VIPARSPECTRA Reflector-Series 300W LED Grow Lights (I think they are 150W actual each.)

I also added 2 x 100W equivalent 6500k bulbs with reflectors to bulk up the white light. I also ended up building a bracket for the lights because the hanging mounts that came with the lights are solid but hung down like a foot and a half so I was not going to raise the lights up very far should I need to later. This allows me to raise the lights to the top of the tent should I need to. I am venting out of a window to avoid needing a filter for odor. I am in a pretty wooded area and I may or may not require a carbon filter or something. We will see. I am in the northeast and it's cold in my basement right now so I am running a small ceramic heater on a thermostat switch.

I am growing in Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil with some extra perlite. You will notice in my early pics (first two weeks or so) I was in a different soil. I had started in MG potting soil. After some more reading and mushroom growth (lol) I decided to move them to the FoxFarm. Should have did that reading sooner but the transplant went fine. I am running a standard 18/6 for veg. They are in 3 gallon fabric pots.

On to seeds. A friend has been growing for a couple of years legally and says that he gave me some feminized White Widow. The seeds themselves did not look awesome so I germed 5 in hopes that 4 would work out but all 5 germinated so I went with it. OK, onto some growth and feel free to comment at will.

February 4th they are coming along just fine.

Here we are with the soil switch on 02/17/2017. You will notice the thermostat probe because it gets into the 50s on that side of the basement. They are sooooo bushy. I probably should have raised the light to promote at least a little stretching. Maybe not. I dunno.

For about a week after the transplant they got quite wilted and stunted....I was worried. They started to come back and here they are at the end of the month. (02/31/2017)

So here comes March and once they adjusted they really started to explode. I only ended up topping three of the five plants once. I would have done it more but I thought with the five plants I would not have any issues filling out a canopy.

You will notice my awesome heat shield. =P
Early on the heater was blowing on one of the pots and I think it was overheating the soil. That one plant was growing but it's leaves were quite deformed (first couple of weeks). Once shielded from the direct heat it started growing normally.

The day after that picture, 03/12/2017, I switched the light cycle over to 12/12. Up until this point I had not done anything except water them. Once I hit the flowering stage on the lights I am alternating in some FloraNova Bloom nutrients every third watering. (Water, water, neuts) They seem to be liking it so far.

Five days after the switch we start seeing the first hairs. :) From what I can tell the feminized seeds are spot on. No male or hermies...looks like 5 for 5 fems.

Decided to get some netting set up to train them a bit. Since this was the last time I would be taking them out of the tent I really pruned the lower 1/3 of the ladies. I know this is better for them anyway but it made watering MUCH easier as well. Here we are on around 03-20-2017.

Which brings us to today (03/26/2017). It has been two weeks from today since the light cycle was switched to flower. I am pleased of how things are going thus far.

Messed up yesterday/day before.
Somehow the light timer switch got thrown to constant on. At this point I am watering every other day but yesterday morning (27th) I opened the tent and they were bone dry and floppy as fuck. I still had not realized that the lights had been on all night and was quite confused. Within an hour or so of watering they had perked back up. Then last night I walked by the tent at midnight and noticed the lights were on....wtf. That is when it all made sense and I realized the timer thing. Turns out two weeks into flower they received almost 40 hours of constant light. DOH!
Either way, as soon as I noticed about midnight last night I made them dark for 12 hours and turned the lights back on at about noon today. They will get a shorter than normal light cycle (9 hours instead of 12) and I will get back on the 9pm-9am.

Hope I did not fuck them up too bad. =/

Here are a few pics from today.

they definitely look happy in there. can you shorten the exhaust ducting? just fold it up, with a piece of duct tape on bottom if needed to prevent it from stretching out and sagging. you'll get better air flow if that is shorter and more direct

That is actually done on purpose. I wanted to make sure that, without a doubt, light would not be able to get in. I suppose it is a bit overkill but does not seem to be an issue for air flow. After harvest I can see if I can make it shorter without letting in any light from outside.

ahh, i see you dont have a carbon filter, my bad. that explains it, i understand. you may want to consider one for the smell factor at least tho, but if it aint broke, dont fix it :bigjoint:

Bah, a few weeks of busy madness and I forget to update. Well, chopped em!
Here are some pics about 4 days before harvest. I harvested on day 56:

Snip snip and I have them on a drying rack in the tent maintaining about 40% humidity and 60-65 degrees.

So today is day 4 and some of the smaller stuff may be going into jars tonight or tomorrow. :)
