My First Grow - Opinions/Advice?

Hi all, I recently started growing 4 plants in a 1.2 x 1.2 x 2 meter tent with a 400W HPS bulb. Its been about 3 and a bit weeks since I germinated them, and was wondering if any experienced growers could give me their opinions on a few photos I took of my setup and plants.

I noticed one of the plants (california hash plant) is curling up a little bit on the tips of the leaves as you can see from the photo. Im not sure if this is a characteristic of the plant or some deficiency?

All opinions and advice is welcome!

Looks like a little bit of heat stress on the one what are your temps low and hi? Other than that they look great. I would give them a little liguid kelp with there next watering ( If your goin organic or something low nitrogen if using chems) most good commercial soils only have enough ferts to last 3 or so weeks. They will blow up in size. Just remember less is more and go 1/4 to 1/2 strength to what is rec. one love bro keep up the green thumb..Kron.

Your leaves are rolling up on the outside.. Its more than likley from Heat and thirst...

http://www.420magazine.com/forums/problems-pests-disease-control/81275-cannabis-plant-pest-problem-solver-pictorial.html

I use this page all the time! Scroll down to the under watering section! This is what your plant is in the early stages of, now i'm strictly a hydro boy but i know you need to saturate your soil and not water it until it drys out!

Get a PH pen! its very necessary if you don't already have one! Don't skip on the good nutrients, i'm currently using house and Gardens nutrients and my plants love it.
Keep a journal of stuff... I like to keep my Ph logged in every few days..... PPM that stuff.... Its always good to document!

One last thing... Dont veg them too long.. or your plants will grow huge and that tent wont contain them.. i have the same tent for my mothers! its great!
Get some 4 inch ducting and a 4 inch vortex to remove heat! Its worth it.
Do you have any ventilation bringing fresh air into the room? Passive or aggressive? Once the plants use up there co2 its going to GREATLY slow growth and you will be disappointed.

That's a nice little read!

Ummm what else can i think of?? READ LOTS AND LOTS!!
If you want to be a success knowledge is power!!!

Growing a good plant is like a chain.. its only a strong as its weakest link (Light)(Water)(C02)(Nutrients)(Temperature)
If one is out of line the plant will suffer and no matter how much of another you give it wont fix the weak point!

Anyways i hope you take this info and have a blast growing! Im on grow 3... Just harvested 2 and it was a huge success!

Happy Growing bro!

Thanks for all the great replies :)

Im currently using Canna terra Vega nutrient and have Canna terra Flora for when they get into the flowering stage.. however i have a suspicion i have been feeding them too much nutrients, so im going to try flush them over the next week and see if that helps.

I always wait for the soil to be dry before watering them again, and the temperatures are steady around 30-35 degreese celcius. I do have two 4 inch fans, an intake on the bottom of the tent and an extraction fan at the top, with a small rotating fan blowing on the plants, i also keep the window of the room open all the time. I have the lights on 24/7 for the vegitating period, would it be better to have them on 18/6? I do need to purchase a PH tester too, is tap water sufficient assuming the PH is fairly neutral?

I'm trying to read as many articles as I can, ill have a look at the ones you posted.

Thanks!

30-35 is way too hot dude.. try 23.... that's a good temp... 18/6... dont waste the electricity.. no point..
There has been no proof that the extra hours adds growth.

Your cooking your plants... you should only get around 30 with C02 supplementation.... but not over 28 ever... ever....

Lower your temps..

best temp is 26c, but like the dude above me said- 28-29 is tops. i grow my first round on 32-34, turnd out shit. what i did is chnged my light plans to work at night and off at daytime. my teps now range from 24-26c.
dong forget a cyrculation fan in the grow room. very important for fungi treatment.

Ok, ive set the lamp and fans on timer to 18/6 and ill find a way to lower the temps, I may have to buy a tube to connect the intake of the tent to the window to get cooler air if the temperatures dont get lower.

Will it effect the growth much if i had the tent slightly open at the door?

You will want to have the door closed when the lights are off. Do you have an exhaust system?

you could open the bottom vents i seen in the picks it looked like they where all closed .let that fan pull in some cooler fresh air..but youll still need to get the heat out.. like others sugested.

your intake is in the Southern vent and exhaust is in the northern right?

Also.. Look into cool tubes!!! there AWESOME! I would never use a light without!

i've managed to lower the temps when lights are on to 24-26, and for the moment have stopped using nutrients to flush the plants until they look good enough to resume. i'll post some updates in a week or so with pics of the progress.

Thanks all!

and yes, i have a 4" intake at the bottom of the tent near the enterance, and a 4" extraction at the top opposite the enterance. they are already looking much better, and the california hash plant leaves have straightened out :)

One other think, i originally planted the seeds without filling the pot right to the top with soil as can be seen.. i did this as i assumed they would grow higher and when they were a bit bigger i could just fill the rest up. The only problem being that the california hash plant grows a bit like an xmas tree in that the branches grow biggest at the bottom of the plant, and the lower branches of the plant dont seem to be getting much higher off the top of the soil. Should i wait it out a bit more and see if it gets a bit higher then fill it up with soil.. or maybe try carefully lifing the plant slightly and putting more soil underneath it?

Thanks!

Im looking into buying a cool tube, how do they work exactly? would i need to connect it to my extraction fan with tubing?

...exactly. Some pull the air through the aircooled tube, and some blow the air through the tube....experiment, see what works best for you... (heads up) if you suck the air through, be sure to tape any airleaks or odor could get through.

Hey all, i thought i would post an update on my grow. I purchased a cooltube, and have set an intake and an extaction fan on either side of the light. I've still got to test the temps proporly but they do seem to have got much lower.. only thing im thinking now is that i dont have an extraction fan to take air out of the tent itself so am leaving the tent door a bit open with a fan blowing on the cooltube to avoid the tent over heating and to get a circulation of air.

A few of the leaves on a couple of the plants are a bit curled from heat what i think may be heat stress but that should hopefully sort itself out in the next day or two.

Tell me what you think of my setup, and if anything should be changed. Thanks :)

Agreed the leaves are showing signs of heat stress.

...looks like you only have the air going in one side of your tent into the aircooled tube, then back out.....which will cool the light, but you also want new air coming into your room.

...here, I drew a quick image for you to check out...tell me if it makes sense to you.

Hey, you're right in the sense that for the moment i only have air passing through the cool tube.. and for the moment im keeping the tent door a bit open, with the fan blowing onto the cool tube constantly to help keep it cool, and get a good circulation and intake of fresh air.. i thought since the light is now so close to the plants not many lumens will get lost by keeping the door a bit open.

I had a look at the sketch you made, that is pretty much my setup although i dont have carbon filters, and my intake is coming from the bottom of the tent (since the cold air comes from the bottom) rather from the top like you have drawn. I will try purchase another extraction fan to be taking air out of the tent, so that i will be able to close the door completely.

Thanks for the feedback and I will keep you all updated :)
