How large is your space?
What sort or lighting & ventilation do you have?
For someone learning I would suggest running a super soil, its easy and a bit more forgiving than hydro (especially for someone whom may have trouble identifying developing plant problems). Depending on the size of your space, typically 5g buckets are more than sufficient for most situations.

When you say you can't control them - how so ?

soil is more forgiving, getyourself a decent light with aircooled hood/cooltube. get some decent feminized seeds so your not wasting time and money on males.

heres a list

light kit with aircoolable enclosure 400w(2 plants)600w(4 plants) 1000w(6+ plants)
some Fox Farm ocean forest soil a bag of espoma garden tone and espoma garden lime, mix 1 bag of tone per 2 bags of soil and about 1 cup of lime per bag of soil (this is what works good for me, not saying its the only way but proven way in my eyes)

a tent or build a grow room/box with white or mylar walls for reflection.
a timer
a circulating fan to fit in your grow area for circulation
a inline or booster fan to cool your light
some ducting to fit your light and fan

maintain temps of 68-80F the middle of that being ideal and the upper/lower sides of the temp scale bordering not good.

plant seeds, roll a 18/6 (use your new timer to maintain light schedule) lighting schedule till the plants are desired height, usually between 4-6 weeks then switch the timer to 12/12 and flower them out. if you down want to fuck with timers than get autoflowering seeds and just roll a 20/4 light schedule all the way through. maybe auto seeds would be a good start as your learning then you can go photo after you feel comfortable.

and those are the basics....as you grow and read and learn you can add more but this simple setup will get you from start to finish. the biggest thing(s) are A: providing ample lighting conditions and B: maintaining temprature

dont over love your plants, they dont need to be watered 4 times a day, hell in 5 gallon buckets they should only need to be watered once a week in later stages of growth and once every 2 weeks in earlier stages of growth, they will tell you when they need water by getting "wilty" as long as your checking on them a little wilt wont kill them just add water and you will be able to watch them perk back up....

just remember man these plants do just fine on thier own in mother nature, with the potting soil mix i described above you shouldnt need to add any nutrients till at least week 2-3 of flower. dont forget the lime as thats what gets you in acceptable PH range....

theres lots of info on this site...do some reading and educate yourself....you obviously havent done much research if you starting a thread "need help with everything" people on here are happy to help but were not going to hold your hand and do all the work for you...put in a little bit of effort and people on here will do the same....no effort on your behalf and people on here will do the same. you might get one guy willing ot hold your hand so he can experiment his growing techniques on your grow to see how they work out but none of the veteran growers are going to.....

read...read and then when you think you have it all down pat...read some more man.

best of luck and welcome to RIU and the wonderfull hobby of growing Mj

It is easier to grow in dirt than hydro. Also, dirt growing is much more forgiving when you
make a mistake. Which obviously happened before.

I'd be worried about the "died off slowly" part if I was you. There is tons of grow journals
here and it sounds like you need to do your homework. Figure out why your earlier
attempts bombed and go from there.
