My first CFL grow.

Hello everyone! I've been growing my first plants for about 2 weeks now, and I'm having a pretty fun time doing so
. I've got a closet set up with a contraption I made. It's a big piece of wood that I drilled holes into so I can stick extension cords through them, and then I have little adapter things that turn a power socket into a light socket so i've got 10 of those, and then of the two ends I've got light bulb socket adapters that turn one socket into 2, so on the wood thing i've got 14 26w 6500k CFL's, and then I have chains on both sides to allow me to adjust how high it is. Then I have 5 clamp lamps, each with a 26w 6500k CFL, plus a lamp laying sideways next to my weakest plant with a 26w. So as of right now i've got 20 26w 6500k CFL's in the closet with 5 plants, planning on adding mylar.

Seeds are bag seed. After this grow I plan on ordering some femmed big bud and ak-47 seeds.

My soil is a mix of scotts premium garden soil, basic top soil, and MG peatmoss.

I'm watering them about every 4 days with half power MG plant food water. (not checking the PH right now, but I do plan on buying a meter soon. But i'm not sure how much to water, or if i'm even watering them as often as I should be.) The temp is about a steady 80 when the lights are on, and 75 or 70 when they are off.

My current light cycle is 18/6.

I was also wondering if anyone knew what was wrong with my little plant? it's the last picture in the list of pics, it's about just as tall but the leafs are no where near as big as the other 4 plants.

I also have a side experiment going on, I had a horrible attempt at a outside grow last year, resulting in some shit-tastic plants, but I saved a small one I started even later and brought it inside after it was only budding for like 2 weeks. I picked the little buds off and I brought it back inside and had it chill with my plants next to the lights and it seems to of made a 100% recovery and had tons of new green growth and go back into veg state. So just yesterday I put it in a little white cabinet kinda thing and I'm starting to bud it, gonna see what happens.

Sorry for the shitty quality pics... was taken with a phone cam.

I'm still considered a noob here and still on my first grow, but I have done TONS of reading and I lurk RIU daily. Anyways, I picked up a moisture meter from a local True Value hardware store for like $5. It is helpful to get your bearings. I also used the weight of the pots (just by lifting them a bit) to determine if they need water. When they are little it is kinda difficult, but as they grow, they tell you when they need water. As for quantity, it is normally recommended to allow 10% of the amount you give them to flow out the bottom. However, each plant is different and you kinda have to feel out want is best for your plants. Also, I didn't see anything about a fan to circulate air and to help the stems become strong enough to hold big buds. CFLs are great (I'm using them to veg) but they can get a bit warm when very close to the plants. The fan to circulate air will help move/remove this heat. Hope this helps!

I was wondering about something else.... I've heard that distilled bottled water that you can buy at the grocery store for like 80 cents a gallon has a 6.5 PH level. Is this true and if it is could I just mix my nutes with this water to water my plants and not worry about the PH level?

Each distilled bottled water has a different pH. I found this by experience! Some are low (like 6) and others are high (like 8). I have bottled water delivered to the house (I only have 2 plants, so it is not that big to take some of our normal drinking water) and it always has a pH of 8.0. When giving plain water, I pH it down to 6.5-6.6 (growing in soil) with General Hydroponics pH down (STRONG STUFF). But, for nutrients, I use Earth Juice products. I have read several different places not to mess with the pH when using EJ. Instead, mix it and let it sit for 24-48 hours with a fish tank airstone bubbling in it (NOTE - if you do this, use a container that is at least 1.5 times the amount of liquid because it will bubble over) and the pH will stabilize. I have not tested or changed the nute pH and the plants seem to like it. Most will say MG is not good, but if it works for you then that is good. I heard it was really easy to get nute burn. The reason I choose EJ was it is listed as really hard to over fert and nute burn with it (plus its organic).

I totally forgot to answer you question directly. I am not sure about MG and the pH. I would say to check round RIU and see what others are doing or just to try it and see. Again .. the plants will tell you. A good reference book to pick up is Jorge Cervantes Marijuana Horticulture Growers Bible. Also, for future reference, to help avoid over-watering (or the risk of over-watering) you can mix a bunch of perlite in your soil. I think I mixed in too much, but I was really afraid of over-watering.

I'm kinda confused on when I should start the budding process. They have been growing for about a month now... I've heard the best is 2 months veg, 2 months flower but i'm not sure if thats true with CFL's?
