last year I did a patio garden 1 tomato plant a couple pea plants, jalepenos , red peppers, mint, basil, rosemary. this year got a backyard so trying to do a little more. or a lot more.

I usually do tomatoes, zucchini, yellow crooked neck squash, bell peppers, jalapenos, cilantro stuff like that. Please some good herbs of coarse.
 
Love the alyssum...they self seed and don't seem to mind full sun and even dry soil. the bicolor lavender is really cool.

I know it's late now but with small patches of corn like that you will want to hand pollonate , It also helps to grow small patches against wind breaks becouse the stalks are usually not that strong

Are you aware of the USDA site GRIN that will send you free seeds for research purposses , Their site is a great place to learn about the different varitys of crops

By chance are you in the SouthWest? I am in AZ and we have Caliche - some of the hardest soil I have ever come across. I have broken and dented a post-hole shovel trying to penetrate thru. I have to grow all my Veggies and herbs in pots, not only do to the soil, but also the harsh summer conditions.
 
Im in southern central cali. Summer been pretty bad this year. since the end of may we have had 45 days over 100f. lows in the 80s. and all that monsoonal moisture making it bad. yeah ive broken a few tools this year trying to dig up this dirt. but I have been making as much compost as I poss can. I think the super high temps speed up the compost making. then I fill up garbage cans full of compost and just start working it in the clay.

I also have a lawn in my backyard . But this is only for grass . Now i am thinking i should also grow some other plants there .Because i have two gardener already for look after the grass.

Im originally from NORCAL! Summer wasn't that bad here - then again I like the heat and a lot of people complain about it when they have no idea what hot is. Try the middle east (128*F) in full gear...that's hot! Temps are anywhere from the high 80s-high 90's lows hitting about 70 with a breeze. Still getting monsoon rain and some low humidity, but the season is just about over. The temps will definitely help speed up the process. So far my cukes, bell peppers, cilantro (outdoors) has been ok, my basil (indoors) has literally thrived!
 
like death valley! well here usally we are just hot and dry, just this year high humidity.i just got some black prince peppers from the farmers market. had to add some purp to the vegi garden.
 
That's how it is in May and June here. 90*-110*F with extremely low humidity, usually less than 10%. Going to do what I can next summer, but not really looking forward to it.
 
image.jpg you can see my hot house toms, and peppers in the back here...this year has been tough here for most everything . just getting my squash and pepper harvests in had blooms dropping from the heat most of the year ... 100 in the day 40 at night .... makes for sweet peppers...
great garden mang i'll send a few veggie seeds your way for the hotness . our monsoonal flow has been so crazy wet . like 14 days of afternoon rain after months of wet... keep up the good work..
