well the key is to get a timer that does 1 minute waterings so as not to cause the hydroton to float. some water pumps have a valve type thing on them and you can close it to like half way to make it fill much slower. I opted for the digital timer.

update.

a few of my plants have nute burn. I switched out the water and filled it up with neutral water. I waited two days and now they are running on half strength nutes. A few of the leaves on one plant have turned yellow and burned on the sides. they turned brown and died.

lookin great man, dont fret the nute burn bro. good job on being on top of it though. i honestly think a little nute burn here or there doesnt hurt em. it lets you know they are maxed out on their nutrients and are bombing u know? at your stage in flowering, i would drop the light if u can. get it as close as possible. it will make the world of difference IMO.

The good thing is that none of the budding is turning colors, so the leaves are getting a bit too much but the buds are enjoying it. But in the end dead leaves means no sunleaves so anyways...

ok so how many inches can I drop it? The plants are 24 inches tall and the light is 19 inches away from a 400 watt hps. I have a fan 4 feet away oscillating 24/7. The fan is only on medium, do you think it's time to crank to it to high?
 
use the hand method to see how hot it is. if its too hot for ur hand at top level its to hot for the plants. i can keep my 250mh about 9-10 inches away without any problems. you should try to rig up a vent system for your light. if you vented a 400 u could keep it probly 6-7 inches away from the plant. i vent my 600s and the glass is cool to the touch under the bulb.

also just see if ur plants are wavin to much that would bend them or stress them when its on high. if u dont think its to much let it go. if its a fuckin hurricane keep it on medium.
 
So, are you only using the dyno grow/bloom nutes? I ask because that is what I am using in my first attempt at some hydro and I feel like I need to be adding more but maybe that's enough. Also, I saw your little ph droplett thingie and it's the same one I use. Is that all you are using for ph readings? I'm colorblind so I think I need to get a digital meter ASAP.
 
IMO, in hydroponics, you must have a digital ph. ppm. and ec meter. i dont know how i would be able to do this without mine.

Yes. I've found that giving them less is better, now dealing with nute burn, I can see what a pain in the ass it is.

yeah thats all I use, I found that dark yellow is the best color for me. Although having a digital one would help since the color of the hps light kinda throws off your eyes.
 
nute burn sucks. LESS IS ALWAYS MORE. when giving your plant nutrients start out slow. my first grow, i had so many nute burns and then deficiencienys and what not. on my second one, which is my scrog, i have had minimal nuteburn, and zero signs of deficiency. as I always say. Yeild comes with skill and experience.
 
Update... nute burn?

So I have a few pics here. I'm just going to ask here since no one responds to my threads in plant problems.

What is this? So far I was sure it was nute burn, but possibly a deficiency? Check it out:

Here's a couple pics of the biggest(seems to be doing the healthiest) un-topped plant. The cola is mabye 1 inch in diameter. The pics can sometimes make them look bigger though. Plants are at 3 weeks flowering.

Plants seem to be doing worse today :(

I thought it was nute burn about 5 days ago. I changed the res and fed them clean water for 36 hours. I then added around 1/3 of what i gave them before to ease them back in. I freaked out when I saw them today and I added 4 tsps to the res.

Should I keep the nutes in the water??? I am afraid that they will burn again. I don't have a PPM meter so what do I do?
 
That looks like nute burn to me. I would flush, and very slowly and gradually start to increase the nutes over a week to 10 days. I would flush with 000 ppm water for half to a full day, then go to 250ish ppm strength nutes for 2 - 3 days, then go to 500ish ppm for another 3 - 5 days, then up to 850 - 900 range thereafter. Very similar what I went through in my grow (link in my signature). I maxed out around 1200 when the plants were 5 - 6 weeks into flower and have now started to lower back into the 900 range this week and will reduce gradually over the final 2 -3 weeks.

The water ran at zero for 1 day. I had it at around 300 ppm for 2 days then now I have it at 700 ppm.

I get one person saying they are deficient then one person saying they're burned... I'm so confused!
