My DWC Pepper Grow

I started these a while back and they never got as far as I wanted them to...but stayed seemingly healthy. Maybe 3 weeks or so i'd say. I put them in a different pan with some hydroton and pH water under a walmart "grow light" simply to try something new.

It got better.

It got even better under a pair of 23 watt 6500k CFL's.

Beginning of 4th week we'll call it. This is where I can say my grow really "begins".

MaxiMato nutes 1/4 tsp, 1/2 gallon water. 6.0 pH.

I got two types of chili peppers on the go (soil grow). One is Gelbe Kirschen, the other unknown (indeed may just be a pepper). What I don't understand is how to flower/fruit them. Are they photoperiod dependant or is it just when they reach a certain age?

I am told they are identical to Tomatoes. I plan on running them 18/6 until the end but switching over to HPS after ~4-5 weeks I'd guess unless someone knows different.

I just come in to the gardening section to post a DWC grow myself.
How big is your HPS? I suggest you use it now. CFL are easier to manage temperature and light distance with young fragile plants but the HPS will give you faster and better growth if you get it right. I grow my weed with 600w HPS from start to finish and am rewarded with the fattest trunk and stems. If you are won over with the cfl's because of light spectrum (them being 'blue' instead of 'orange') then just chuck them in at the same time. You could use them for extra lighting on the tops or use them as side/underside lighting to help get production out of the bits that would be shaded by the top and lose out on light penetration due to distance from the lamp above.

Peppers are very much like tomatoes, in that they'll just flower when they reach a certain age. What I do is pinch off all the flowers that spring up until I can veg it to a hardy size. They'll try pretty early, but by pinchin' em all off, the plant sees it's not a good time for flowers and goes about growing a bit more before trying again. Increases yield quite a bit. I waited til the beginning of August to let mine go, but I got started late this season.

The CFL bulbs were simply to get ome growth before going under the MH (400watt). My lettuce (Romaine) and peppers are both under the 400 watt MH for now. I am hoping I can harvest lettuce before the peppers can/will be put under HPS 12/12. I've heard its not necessary but i've heard it does hurt as well. Does anyone have info on this? Can/should I run peppers under MH 18/6 until completion or do I need to hit an HPS stage at some point?
