SDS 's tapping way ...
(manually done ,by hand,no drill )

for mounting Vero29 :

-2.5 mm Drill (better the HSS / Cobalt type )
- 3 x.5 mm (M3) tap bit
-WD40 lubricant.

-Make a clean straight and perpendicular hole with drill.
DO NOT OPEN A THROUGH-HOLE AT THE HEAT -SINK.
YOU WANT THE TAP BIT TO STOP .

-spray some WD40 on the hole.
-Start tapping slowly . 1 and 1/2 turns inwards ,1/2 turn back (outwards) .
-Continue like that,until tap stops.
-Unscrew tap carefully.
-Clean and degrease the threads.

Are you using a drill press or some sort of jig to keep the drill bit straight?

SDS- you should try a cold form tap. No more in-out-in-out, no chips to clean up. Need a slightly bigger drill bit(2.8mm) though.

the spiral FLUTE taps mentioned in posts above are ideal for blind holes as they draw the chips out instead of packing them into the hole, this and the way they are cut will give you more thread depth. there are also spiral TIP or POINT taps but these are very different, know the difference before you buy. ALSO, spiral flute taps are generally weaker than the straight flute types so are easier to break off in a hole. i only have experience with spiral flutes in M5 or larger and if treated right they do just fine. very important is the proper use of cutting oil....luckily, for aluminum this isn't anything too exotic, WD40 or kerosene will do great. important part is to put whatever you choose in a small container so you can dip the tip of the tap in and swirl it around to wash all the chips off before going to a new hole. also important for spiral flutes IMO is to chamfer or lightly countersink the hole.

Thread forming taps [cold form taps] seem to the easiest to use, especially for beginners to hole tapping, drilling, etc.

Unfortunately they are about 5x the cost of a normal spiral flute, at least here in the states.
Although, they probably last 5x as long, due to the way they work. So trade-offs!

Tools to consider if you plan on tapping lots of holes in expensive heatsinks. A good thread forming tap should last thousands of holes at slow speeds.

Compare the price of buying the right tool for the job to breaking expensive taps in expensive sinks.

Also, if drilling blind holes, make sure a bottoming tap is used. Bottoming taps can also do through holes. I don't use lube at all due to a bad lazy bone. Doesn't seem to hurt anything :P

Spiral Flute 4/40's : cheapest I have found, these are ideal for cutting blind holes and you could use them for thru holes, but they have just as much chance binding in thru holes like a spiral tip or taper tip in a blind hole.

With all this arduino info salm, I think with the e-nail I'm building, instead of buying a pid controller I should attempt to arduino myself one. The gimido heating coil arrived and I have a few arduino clones that came also, I still need to pick up a SSR but I have a magnetic one that will work until I hit up the local electronics shop. I also have a adafruit 2 wire lcd shield which in adafruits learning section they use to make a sous-vide. I think it should be easily convertible, it uses a DS18B20 temp sensor so I would just need to figure out how to hook up the k-type thermocouple and then edit the code. I think I need to get something like this for the arduino to communicate but I still have more research to do.

So I think I have everything ordered for my arduino based e-nail project,
I got the coil and xlr connector from gimido everything else is from from ebay.
I try to get everything from the same store so they would all arrive together.
  • 25A Solid State Relay for turning the heating coil on and off
  • MAX6675 Thermocouple Module for amplifying the signal from the thermocouple. I know the MAX31855 is the newer version of this chip but these are a lot cheaper and I think they should work anyway. I dont need the thermocouple that comes with it as the coil has one already but it whatever.
  • Logic Level Converter because the arduino outputs data at 5v and the the thermocouple amp is only 3v3. I'm not sure if I need this or not because the MAX6675 module says its operates at 5v but I don't see and 3v3 regulator on the module like the adafruit ones have. Its cheap enough that I don't care.
Now for a display and controlling the settings I already have a Adafruit RGB LCD Shield with buttons for changing settings.
I will use that to get the program all setup and working but will replace it with cheaper parts later so I ordered them now.
  • I2C 16X2 Character LCD Module for display the I2C is not needed for this project because only 2 pins are used for the thermocouple and the SSR but it makes the wiring so much easier.
  • Rotary Encoder Module for changing the temperature and PID settings. I'm not sure but I think this can be used as a button also when you push on it, if not I have some tactile push buttons laying around.
Thats all I need I think,
I have little things like power cords, sockets, switches and wire connectors already but just because I was ordering and it was such a cheap order I added a few things just for the fun of it.
When everything arrives I will see if I can get it together and working properly,
If all goes well I will post the code and wiring info here.

I have problems with the current version of fritzing in debian stable so I don't use it. This new version seems to run much smoother than the one in the repos, I just downloaded and extracted the tarball, ran ./fritzing and it all seems to work pretty good. I will test it out, I hope it works properly because I have been missing fritzing since I got rid of my last windows machine 2 years ago.
