My Dilemma

I set up some bird feeders to draw in as many wintering birds as I could. I'm doing a comparison/contrast study of winter and summer plumage. Well it seems my feeder has another purpose.

It's now the local take-out for my resident hawks. My poor little Goldfinches! :(

That should make plumage collection (for comparison purposes of course) much easier. :-D

You should make a movie of your birdy friends. I'm envisioning it with exactly the same voice actors as The Adventures of Milo and Otis. "Oh look a big bird in the tree, lets see if he knows the way home Milo." :eyesmoke:

i had this happen last year. the prettiest birds make the easiest targets. i never even saw hawks around here until i started feeding the birds. i stopped feeding for a while and the hawks went away, but so did some of my favorite birds and only a few came back.

this year i'm trying to focus on attracting ground feeding birds and i just give suet to the regular pretty birds (skipping the seed feeders for a bit). the ground feeding birds are easier to provide some camouflage for and they hang around a bit when they feel safe. so far so good. i'll bring the seed feeders back for the spring breeding season, but the variety of suet is still attracting more birds than i thought, just not like my usual seed blend.

why don't you just kill it like you do to all the cats?

Intentionally killing a cat is a criminal offense in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, regardless of ownership. Anti-cruelty laws apply to all cats—companion, abandoned, lost, and feral.

did i miss something? who is "you all" and why are they killing cats? and why would i kill my birds?

my birds do attract cats but so doesn't my mulch bed. i have a super soaker by my kitchen window for the cats and squirrels. and yes, it's full of plain 'ol H2O. the cats really don't bother with the birds a whole lot from what i can tell. they do love to shit in my garden though.

He is referring to me and his rant in the hate the hate cats thread. He managed to get that one closed.

i didn't say "you all". ;)

carne likes to kill all the local cats that come near him because he feels they are hurting his wild birds. he somehow feels he has that right. i was just suggesting he kill the hawks as well.
