Thai sticks most likely had a type of hash oil on them. It certainly wasn't opium as teh heat of combustion of cannabis would destroy all of the opium goodies.
High quality cocaine can still be had, as can MDA and legit SEA CW heroin. Yet you fail to mention Quaaludes. Those are sorely missed but not unheard of. I'm in my early 30s and have done all four of those. And plenty of goodies that didn't exist back then.
There was also plenty of cut shit flying around back then.

TOTALLY FALSE about the temps of burning Marijuana hurting the effectiveness of Opium. Marijuana burns at a lower temperature than Opium, so you're misguided on your statement...Alex

You're the one who is misguided. THC vaporizes above the decomposition point of morphine and the other opium alkaloids. You can look that one up. I'd suggest a Merck index.
There's plenty of ether around still. Also I know a thing or two about how to clean up a chemical if needed. Check out the threads in my sig
