What's up RIU! :eyesmoke:

Title says it all really. I'm twenty years old and would like to move to California not just because of the MMJ laws but also because I fell in love with the place when I was there in 2008. I visited a friend's father who lived in the Irvine/Tustin area. Great place, absolutely love it.

I am originally from Europe & lots from California reminded me of Europe which I liked. I also liked how everything was more "alive" over there. There was life outside! Anyway, I currently live somewhere where I did not want to move to but had no other option at the time. I also don't have much family (everyones still in Europe) & don't get along well with my father or his new wife (who just so happen to live near where I live)...

Anyways, I've been dreaming of moving to California for quite some time now. I want to move out there and start my own life without all the bullshit im going through right now with family problems, etc. I have absolutely no idea where to move to. I haven't talked to anybody from California...where do you guys recommend? I am looking to live somewhere that's maximum an hour from the coast...don't care to live in the heart of LA either. I'm kind of a hippie type of guy who likes to live a little outside of the big cities but also not out in the middle of nowhere.

Jobwise, I'm open for anything. I will be looking for a 1 bedroom apartment most likely since I don't have financing available to purchase a house at my age.

I'm open to hear everybody's input on this subject. Really interested in finding at least 5 different spots in California which I can hopefully go visit sometime this year.

Thanks guys!

If I can afford a two bedroom then I will take a two bedroom. But I've been looking at a couple places (just on apartments.com or w/e), and most two bedrooms start around $700 which unfortunately I can't spend. I would like to limit it to around $600-650 for a two bedroom.

How's Bakersfield?? Seen a couple nice apartments there with a decent price.

Thanks for the input! I might have a job opportunity at the John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, but if living costs (apartment, etc) is too high around that area I will probably have to look elsewhere...any areas within a 30 mile radius of the John Wayne airport that are not all too expensive?

anyone know if its hard just going there and have some "low-life" job, small apartment, chill, get tanned and visit some of the RIU growers around there if they wanted a visit ^^ just live in cali for 2 years or so.

Do i need to prove myself as an asset to the community to go there for a longer time. I mean is it needed to have a carreer and edjucation planned out :P?.

i live in sweden now =)

Thanks HoLE! I lived in Canada for about two years outside of Toronto in a little place called King City. I also agree with your last sentence there. I've been thinking about moving for quite some time now but recently I've had a couple wake up calls; put a lot of thought into it & this is what I want to do. Move out to Cali, start my own path of life, hopefully meet a special someone (someone who smokes obviously!), and start a family...boy I'm getting way ahead of myself now!

I've looked at a couple places further north online, Stockton to be more specific. Any thoughts?

Here's a couple other places I've looked at -

Riverside
Lancaster
Palmdale

Anyone know much about them? :peace:

Just a tip if u wanna look closer u can check most of the places out in google maps street view. I just took a tour around entire bakersfield an hour ago. I guess bakersfield is smaller then the places mentioned above, and i live in a pretty small town to compare with.

Riverside is ok but a little much for me. Lancaster is way rural, farming etc.. out there. Palmdale is high desert, cheap housing at this point I think... Haven't lived in the S Cal area in a while but I grew up out there and still have family there.

Here is the real skinny. You will probably not work near where you live. Most likely in the S Cal Area you will be commuting to work. Look on a map and see how far and how many freeways you would need to use living in any given location. The high desert is pretty close to alot of different things and at this point in the economy probably has some of the cheapest living. commuting to work is a way of life there... just make sure you never have to do more than an hour one way to work.

Yup I've been considering that for sure. I'm used to driving 40 minutes to work so a minor commute to work isn't much of a big deal for me. Palmdale's got some of the best apartment prices I've seen yet. Read Stockton is in the top five US crime cities, so I guess we'll scratch that idea ha..

Personally If I were you I would live in a college town. Rent would be cheaper (for me it is anyways, 369/mo with utilities and everything) good place too, and you have the option of enrolling. That way you can hold down a crappy job (a lot of places look to hire inexperienced college kids) and then perhaps take some classes and start a career. Just a thought...
