Always been a little weary of mounting inline fans and cutting holes in walls to put ducting through and transfer air from the room to a different environment how hard is it and how much damage to your property are you causing I assume different spots have different options just never have been sure how proper cooling really worked all I have really done is flange a 4 inch on top of a 400 and let it suck air from the hood taped ducting to wall and sat the inline on the ground which I know isn't the best way to go about it

Also can a 6 inch fan hook u to a 4 inch hood or must it all be in sync ducting hood fan etc?

last question first... yes, you can run a six inch fan to four inch ducting, or the other way around if you'd like... you simply need a reducer to go from 6 inch to 4... they sell them on most hydro sites, or much cheaper from lowes / home depot...
the only thing about running a reducer is that you'll be losing effency(sp?) obviously with the interrupted airflow and what not, same with say a lot of turns in the duct work..
as for how you go about making a hole in the wall.. that's easy as well.. if you're going through a normal house wall, just make sure your not going to be cutting through a stud in the wall, which should be every 16 inches in every wall... then just get yourself a drill and a correct diameter hole saw to make the cut.. hole saws work great for making holes for ducting, imo..
as to how hard it would be to fix the holes if you ever wanted to clean up shop and say move, all you have to do is cut out a piece of drywall to fit the hole, tape and mud it in, and paint over it all when done sanding it.. not really much work if you're somewhat mechanically inclined in the least..

i feel the OP's pain ..i had the same problem when first setting up the proper ventilation system. I used the same method as above ..... to a t even with the spare piece of drywall for when/if shop needs to close

lol, yah, i have an odd closet setup, and had to drill a hole in the top of the closet for my duct work, and found that the four inch hole saw worked perfect for my ducting..

running a 6" fan through a 4" hole is going to put a lot of stress on your fan.

It's going to be louder and burnout sooner

edit: if you have to do it, then get a fan spell controller and run the fan on a lower speed

I really don't have a space to make any holes for ducting at the moment but I am starting to get a lot of friends taking interest in my abilities and don't want to let them down if I ever needed to be of assistance with air cooling a space if I ever am called upon I would think I would be ducting from either a garage to the outside (wall to wall) or some type of room in the house also concerned about concealing any suspicious activity even though i'm in Cali's bud friendly environment.
